The purpose of this study was to examine the mental models of the global environment that unscientific major college students internalize. A total of 68 freshman and sophomore students who are taking liberal arts classes were subjected to a test consisting of two steps, visual drawing and verbal explanation. The majority of college students perceived the artificial elements as a component of global environment and the percentage of those recognizing natural elements as components was low. The mental models of college students were absolutely high in their perception as a space that is contaminated by human influence and modified by humans. In addition, the percentage of negative judgement for the current global environment was high. Efforts are needed to open up a course on global environment that can foster environmental literacy and provide opportunities for education for college students who will grow into future members of society in the liberal arts curriculum of the university.

본 연구의 목적은 과학을 전공하지 않는 대학생들이 내면화 하고 있는 지구 환경에 대한정신모형을 분석하는 것이다. 교양 수업을 수강하는 1-2학년 학생들 68명을 대상으로 시각적인그리기 방법과 언어적인 설명하기 방법의 2단계로 구성한 검사를 투입하였다. 대학생들의 과반 수가 지구의 환경을 구성하는 요소로 인공적 요소를 인식하고 자연적 요소를 인식하는 비율은낮았다. 대학생들의 정신모형은 인간의 영향을 받아서 오염되고 인간에 의해 수정된 공간으로인식하는 비율이 절대적으로 높았다. 또한 현재의 지구 환경에 대해 부정적인 상태로 판단하는 비율이 높았다. 대학의 교양 교육과정에서 미래의 사회 구성원으로 성장할 대학생들에게 환경소양을 함양시킬 수 있는 지구 환경에 대한 교과목을 개설하고 교육의 기회를 제공하기 위해서 노력해야 할 것이다.
