Hericium erinaceum (Hericiaceae), well known as lion’s mane mushroom, is a edible mushroom traditionally used as an herbal medicine in Korea, China and Japan. It has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial and neurotrophic activities. For the purpose of enhancing the edible or medicinal values of H. erinaceum, it is worthwhile to perform phytochemical research. The isolation of the n-hexane layer of the fruiting bodies of H. erinaceum was conducted through various chromatographic techniques, which yielded fourteen compounds. The structures of isolated compounds were determined based on spectroscopic methods such as 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR and HRESI-TOF-MS. As a result, fourteen compounds were determined as ergostane-type sterols (1-4) and aromatic compounds (5-14). Among the isolated compounds, compounds 8 and 10-14 were first reported from nature. These results provide useful information about the constituents of H. erinaceum.
