Flammulina velutipes belonging to white rot fungi is one of the commercially important edible mushrooms and is produced in large quantities due to the introduction of a automated and mechanized cultivation system in Korea. Despite the chief item of export among edible mushrooms, Flammulina velutipes has the lowest distribution rate of domestic cultivar, estimated that about 20 percent. As the result that most white cultivars of Flammulina velutipes produced and exported in Korea were introduced from Japan, farmers pay a large amount of royalties. Therefore, we developed a new pure domestic cultivar “Baeke” to substitute for Japanese cultivars and improve storage for mushroom export. Baeke was bred by mating two monokaryotic strains isolated from ASI 4216-18(Hansol) and ASI 4217-26(Baekjung) in Mushroom Research Division. Baeke showed faster mycelial growth and higher mycelial density than the control variety on PDA media for 7days of incubation at 25°C. Even the mycelia growth of baeke was observed to maintain at 30°C unlike the control. Spawn running period on the sawdust substrate required 30days at 25°C. The cultivation period and optimum temperature were 14±1 days at 14°C for primordia formation and 14±1 days at 7°C for fruiting body development. The length of pilei and stipes in Baeke harvested in optimal stage exhibited 11.2±0.5mm and 125±5.4mm and the control harvested in optimal stage showed 11±0.5mm and 141.9±5.7mm respectively. The yield had no significant difference between Baeke(257.4±13.5g) and control (270.7±17.8g) per 1,100ml in bottle cultivation. As the data showed, Baeke was almost equal to the foreign varieties in terms of quality and yield and had commercial value because of uniform shape of fruitbody. Development of new variety is expected to spread domestic coverage after on-the-site investigation of Baeke in farms.
