The purpose of this paper is to show that Philosophy for Children is essential to cultivate moral and civic character. Philosophy for Children constructs the axis of character into intellectual, moral and citizen character, and makes them connect with the ways to cultivate moral and civic character. Methodologically, on the one hand, the dialogue, such as listening and speaking, implies the open attitude of intellectual character, the respect and consideration of moral character, and the communication and cooperation of the civic character. On the other hand, the community of inquiry fosters the virtues of intellectual, moral, and civic character through respect for peers, critical and reflective thinking and cooperation with friends. In Philosophy for Children, the classrooms are the best places that enable the students to enhance moral and civic character. In this sense, Philosophy for Children rejects the dualization of in-class and out-of class activities, which implies an indispensable method of Philosophy for Children.

어린이철학은 인성의 축을 지적, 도덕적, 시민적 인성으로 구축하고, 듣기와 말하기에 기초한 대화를 통해, 지적 인성의 열린 태도와 도덕적 인성의 존중과 배려, 시민적 인성의 의사소통과 소통과 협력의 덕을 키우는 의의가 있다. 다른 한편으로, 어린이철학은 또 다른 테크닉인 탐구공동체의 건설을 통해, 친구들에 대한 존중과 비판적, 성찰적 사고, 자기 수정 및 친구들과의 협력 등으로 지적, 도덕적, 시민적 인성의 덕을 함양케 하는 의의 또한 지닌다. 대화와 탐구공동체가 전개되는 수업과 교실이 도덕적, 시민적 인성 함양을 가능하게 하는 장이라는 점에서 그것은 교실 수업과 교실 밖 활동의 이원화를 거부하며, ‘지금 여기서’ 인성함양의 유의미한 방법과 실천을 제공한다.
