Since the Three Kingdoms Period, the contents of the line engravings have been widely used as materials for paintings in ancient tombs murals. The materials of Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs’ line engravings in Ulsan are usually similar to the relics excavated from ancient tombs of the Silla Dynasty in the 5th and 6th centuries. The ritual parade paintings on Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs seem to lead the deceased tomb owner to the other world, the afterlife of Taoism. The main contents of this view of the world is the worship of trees and birds. And this idea was popular during the Silla Dynasty, and is also seen in China’s Han Dynasty and Tang Dynasty. The ritual parade paintings on Cheonjeon-ri Petroglyphs are in the same context as the ancient tomb murals of Goguryeo. In other words, he is moving toward the afterlife, an immortal world. This indicates that these pieces were continuously performed as part of the ritual at that time.

세선각화의 내용은 삼국시대 이래 고분 출토유물 및 고분벽화에서도 회화의 소재로 많이 사용 되었다. 울산 천전리 세선각화의 소재들은 주로 5-6세기 신라 적석목곽분 출토유물의 내용과 상통한다. 대개 죽은 자의 영혼이 승선하기를 기원하는 타계관을 내포하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 천전리 세선각화 중 행렬도는 고인이 된 주인공을 타계인 신선계로 인도하는 출행도로 보인 다. 타계관의 根幹이 되는 성수신앙과 조령신앙은 기원전후한 경주 사로국 시기에도 사람들의 관념으로 자리 잡고 있었다. 이것은 漢·唐代의 승선관념과 궤를 같이한다. 이 천전리 출행도 는 고구려고분벽화의 출행도와 같은 성격으로서 신선계를 향해 나아가는 고인의 모습을 묘사한 것이다. 즉 승선을 기원하는 묘주승선도로 이해할 수 있다. 당시 신라 고총고분 조성시기의 도 교적 세선각화 조성 분위기가 書石谷에서 제의의 일종으로 지속적으로 행해졌음을 알 수 있다.
