Since the 1990s, Korean literature has embraced “North Korean escape literature” as an important theme, especially as a symbol of a post-division era. In recent decades, debates about North Korean literature have focused on novels by major South Korean writers about North Korean escapees. By and large, these novels deal with the ordeal of escape and the subsequent lives of the escapees. More recently, however, some short stories have attracted attention for casting North Korean reality in a more objective light. Ban Di’s The Accusation (2014) and Do Myeong-hak’s The Cruel Gift(2018) are fine examples of this trend. The Accusation is a collection of short stories by a North Korean writer active during the latter half of the 20th century whose works were smuggled into the South. In these stories, themes such as the “Great Leader” or “the romance of revolution’’ heretofore ubiquitous in North Korean novels are nowhere to be found. On the other hand, the content in all 7 stories condemn a North Korean system fraught with meaningless violence. It is important that the North Korean reality they condemn dates to circa July 1994, the time of Kim Il-sung’s death. The Cruel Gift is a collection of 7 short stories written by Do Myeonghak after his resettlement in South Korea. While in the North, Do belonged to the North Korean Writers Alliance(Jakka dongmaeng) writer’s alliance. Unlike most stories that focus on the escapee’s personal experiences or denunciation of the Northern government, the stories in this collection are noteworthy for their aesthetic realism that shapes the reality in the narratives. In particular, social change in North Korea, represented by the “culture of the marketplace” (jangmadang munhwa) in the 2000s, surface in realistic depictions of the limitations of the system and signs of impending collapse. These short story collections denounce the serious evils caused by systemic contradictions in contemporary North Korea, contradictions that surpass the level of human rights abuses and reach what can only be described as inhuman living conditions. Of particular importance are the narrative intensity and dramatic composition that stand out conspicuously in their objective factuality, and the works’ treatment of ‘North Korea reality’, an aspect ‘missing from discussion’ in existing works of North Korean literature. Furthermore, they also provide an opportunity to reflect on South Korean novels which seem overlyinternalized in the light of the realism in these North Korean works.

1990년대 이후 한국문학은 탈분단의 징후를 구체화된 양식으로 형상화하 는 ‘탈북문학’을 중요한 테마로 수용했다. 이러한 탈북문학의 중심에는 남 한의 주요작가들이 쓴 탈북소재 소설이 놓여 있었다. 그 내용은 경제적 이 유로 북한을 이탈한 사람들이 겪는 고통이나 그 이탈 과정의 경험이 주를 이루었다. 그동안의 탈북문학에 관한 논의는 대체로 이런 견지에서 진행되 었다. 최근 들어 이와는 달리 북한현실을 직접 경험한 작가들의 소설이 주 목을 끌고 있다. 반디의 『고발』(2014)과 도명학의 『잔혹한 선물』(2018)은 이 를 대표하는 단편소설집이다. 『고발』은 20세기 후반 북한에서 작가 생활을 해온 작가 ‘반디’가 쓴 것이 인편으로 전해져 국내에서 발간된 소설집이다. 이 책에 수록된 전 7편의 단 편소설에는 기존 북한소설에 나타나는 ‘수령형상’이나 ‘낭만적 혁명성’ 같 은 주제가 전혀 반영돼 있지 않다. 반면에 북한체제가 허위로 가득한 폭력 의 세계라는 사실을 고발하는 내용을 담고 있다. 다양한 계층의 인물을 통 해 김일성 사망(1994년 7월) 전까지의 ‘수령우상화’가 이후의 ‘수령영생화’ 로 이어지는 1990년대 초중반 북한체제 아래 핍박당하는 주민의 실상을 그 렸다. 『잔혹한 선물』은 북한의 작가동맹 소속 시인으로 활동하던 도명학이 남한 에 정착해 쓴 7편의 단편소설을 수록했다. 대개의 탈북작가들이 체험수기나 정권고발 차원의 작품을 발표한 것과는 달리 이 작품집은 현실을 형상화하 는 리얼리즘이 미학적으로 실현되고 있다는 점에서 주목을 요한다. 2000년 대 이후 ‘장마당문화’로 대표되는 북한사회의 변화 내용을 중심으로 체제 의 통제와 주민의 실생활 사이에 생겨난 긴장이 묘사된다는 점이 이 작품집 의 무엇보다 큰 특징이다. 간결한 구어체 문장으로 가독성을 유지한다는 장 점도 있다. 이들 소설집은 1990년대 이후 극심한 경제적 빈곤에 시달리는 북한현실 을 다양한 형태로 드러내면서 특히 사회 각층에 만연돼 있는 인권유린의 실 상을 고발하는 단계로 나아가고 있다. 이 점 기존 탈북문학에서 빠뜨리고 있는 ‘북한현실’에 대한 남다른 각성이 요구되는 대목이다. 한편 이들 작품 들이 근대문학의 형성 이후 지나치게 내면화된 한국소설의 미학적 형태를 다시금 리얼리즘소설의 차원에서 성찰할 계기를 마련해 주기도 한다.
