The purpose of this thesis is to explore the ‘melancholy’, the social affect which was reflected in the poetry around 1990 by examining the poetic responses of contemporary literature on the sudden political and social changes around that period. There are two major factors that influenced the social affect of Korean society which changed rapidly after the political system of 1987. One is discovering that the capitalism of late industrial society is becoming widespread, and the other is witnessing the democratization, which the 80’s have collectively desired, have ended as perfunctory democracy. Firstly, Mr. Melancholy appeared in the series of flaneur motif in Ham Min-bok’s One Day of Mr. Melancholy(1990) is a figure walking through the city of late industrial society in Korea. However, unlike the flaneur of Walter Benjamin, who aimed at awakening by looking at the landscape and the crowd, Mr. Melancholy chooses to be absorbed in the images of urban landscape, crowd, and advertisement, etc. The phenomenon of disorientation in the urban landscape and internal confinement of an individual in the post industrial society was considered as a disease called ‘melancholy’, which Ham Minbok regarded as the identity of the times. Ham Seong-ho perceives the society of that time as the ruins which the awaiting Messiah(Mireuk) is absent in The solitude of 5.67 billion years (1992). The era of the military regime of the 80s ended, but the world that people waited didn’t come afterward. This thesis discovers the mechanism of affect, especially the affect of melancholy which operated in a variety of ways due to the failure of political orientation and the prevalence of capitalist intoxication in the transition period by examining the literary responses of the times.

본 연구는 1990년대 전후 한국 사회의 정치 사회적 급변에 대한 당대 문 학장의 시적 대응을 검토함으로써 당대의 시에 반영된 사회적 정동(情動)인 우울에 대하여 탐색한다. 87년 체제 이후 급변하는 한국 사회의 사회적 정 동에 영향을 미친 것은 크게 두 가지이다. 이는 후기산업사회의 자본주의가 만연해지는 것을 발견하는 것이며, 또 다른 하나는 80년대가 집합적으로 열 망했던 민주화가 형식적 민주주의에 그친 것을 목도한 것이다. 먼저 함민복 의 『우울씨의 일일』(1990)에 등장하는 ‘우울씨’는 당대 한국의 후기산업사 회의 도시를 걷는 인물이다. 하지만 초기산업사회를 독해한 벤야민의 산책 자가 풍경과 군중을 바라보며 각성을 지향하는 것과는 다르게, 그는 도시의 풍경, 군중, 광고 등의 이미지에 도취되기를 선택한다. 후기산업사회의 도시 풍경 속에서 방향상실하며 개인적 내면에 갇히는 것이 함민복이 본 당대의 시대적 정체성인 ‘우울’이라는 병증이다. 함성호는 『56억 7천만 년의 고독』 (1992)에서 당대의 사회를 메시아(미륵)가 부재하는 폐허로 인식한다. 80년대 의 군부 정권의 시대는 갔지만 이후 도래한 것은 기다렸던 세계가 아니었 다. 본고는 전환기에서 정치적 지향의 실패, 자본주의적 도취의 만연 등에 따라 다양하게 작동하는 정동의 메커니즘을 당대의 문학적 반응을 통해 살 펴봄으로써 당대의 우울의 정동에 관하여 탐색한다.
