A job may function as a mirror reflecting the time period. The jobs appearing repetitively in works by Soseki closely connects not only to the values of the author alone but also to those of people who lived in the same time period. This focus has been brought up since Soseki frequently mentions the unusual job detective in both lectures and novel works. To begin with, detectives portrayed in his novels play a role of a job, while representing emptiness itself without any name or humans assigned to its existence. Furthermore, since it is portrayed inhumanly, it is considered as completely extinguished by the author as an alienated being from the real world. In the lecture ‘The Philosophical Basis of Literature’, he highlights that having detective as a job means the absence of qualification as a human being. He considers the attitudes of the detectives of destroying other ideologies besides truth as a morbid phenomenon. In addition, Soseki views detectives and the police from the same perspective. The police was his target of criticisms along with detectives, since they monitored and interfered in the daily lives of subjects of domination as they played a role for a dominator during the time period. Eventually, the existence of the police existed as a background in Soseki’s perception on detectives, and for being closely related to the system of the modern nation, served as the basis of criticism target.

직업이라는 것은 시대를 비추는 하나의 거울이기도 하다. 소세키의 텍스트에서 반복적으로 제시되는 직업들은 한 시대 또는 작가 개인뿐만 아니라 동시대에 살았던 사람들의 가치관과도 긴밀하게 이어진다. 소세키는 소설 작품뿐만 아니라 강연에서도 탐정이라는 이색적인 직업을 자주 언급하고 있어 주목했다. 먼저 소설 작품 속에 묘사된 탐정은 직업으로서 역할은 존재하지만 인물도 이름도 부여되지 않는 존재의 공허 그 자체라고 할 수 있다. 그리고 비인간적으로 묘사하고 있기 때문에 현실세계에서는 소외된 존재로서 작가에 의해 완전히 소멸 당했다고 보았다. 강연 ｢문예의 철학적 기초｣에서는 탐정을 직업으로 하고 있는 한 인간의 자격이 없음을 강조했다. 소세키는 진실 이외의 다른 이상을 철저히 파괴해버리는 탐정적 태도를 병적인 현상으로 보았다. 또 소세키는 탐정과 경찰을 동일한 시각에서 바라보았는데, 당시 경찰은 지배자로서 피지배자의 일상생활을 간섭, 감시하는 존재로 탐정과 함께 소세키의 비판 대상이 되었다. 결국 소세키의 탐정 인식의 배경에는 경찰이 있었고, 근대 국가의 제도와도 밀접하게 관련되어 있어 소세키에게 비판 대상의 기제로 작용했다.
