This study aims to conduct a comparative examination on the perception of the Avatamsaka Sutra of three renowned masters in the Avatamsaka Sect of Joseon, Seolpa-Sangeon, Yeondam-Yuil, and Inak-Uicheom, by analyzing their explanatory writings on the Chapter of the 6th Sermon of Buddha (K. Sipjipum 十地品), in the Collection of Annotations of Avatamsaka Sutra (K. Hwaeomsocho 華嚴疏鈔) in order to highlight the unique features and differences of their understandings of Buddhism. Earlier studies, such as an account by a Buddhist monk from the modern period, Park Han-young, have revealed that Yeondam and Inak had a distant relationship, in regard of the periodical surroundings of their times and their different views on Buddhism. But this study tries to suggest definite evidences of an academic interchange between them by examining their annotations on the Avatamsaka Sutra. Shown below is the three evidence of the contention. Firstly, only from Yeondam’s collection of annotations, Yumanggi (Ch. 遺忘記), explanatory diagrams (K. Gwado 科圖) are found. Secondly, the comments on the annotations of the Avatamsaka Sutra made by Seolpa, Yeondam, and Inak all have traces of amendments. Thirdly, the collections of annotations of Yeondam and Inak have dealt with the same issue but they explained it in a different manner. On the basis of these three evidences, it is possible to assume that they each made annotations on the Avatamsaka Sutra in different times and manners. Given the fact that the annotations from latter date added new explanations to its preceding writings, it is reasonable to understand that there were academic interchanges between the three monks. As a result of examinations on Yeondam and Inak’s annotations, the former seems to have pursued deeper understandings on the meaning of the Avatamsaka Sutra while the latter have aimed to conduct meticulous examinations. This study also tried to elucidate the difference of Yeondam and Inak’s understandings on the meaning of the Avatamsaka Sutra. As an example, about the meaning of a phrase “都無所得”, which is read as “there is nothing to gain”, from the Collection of Annotations of Avatamsaka Sutra, Yeondam tried to interpret those words from the perspective of Yogacara Thought, while Inak tried to read them in the relation with the Avatamsaka Study. Yeondam’s approach to deal with the issue on the basis of the phenomenal world and Inak’s approach to explain it from the view of fundamental world suggest their different Buddhist perception. This study examines only a small part of the two monks’ annotations on the Avatamsaka Sutra in order to highlight the differences in their thought. It is anticipated that more detailed analysis on the rest of their writings will reveal further distinctive features of their ideas on Buddhism.

본고는 18세기에 『화엄경소초』｢十地品｣에 관한 講學私記를 남긴 蓮潭有一과 仁岳 義沾의 私記를 비교한 논문이다. 먼저 연담과 인악에 대해 근대 승려 朴漢永은 18세기라는 시대적 배경과 사기 저술을 분석하면서 서로 왕래가 소원했을 것으로 주장하다. 하지만 필자는 연담과 인악의 화 엄십지사기를 분석하고 몇 가지 사례를 들어 인악이 연담의 향을 받았을 것이라고 보았다. 뒤에 저술된 화엄사기가 먼저 저술된 화엄사기를 내용면에서 보완하는 부분이 있다면 향을 받았다고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 대체로 서술 형식면에서 볼 때, 연담의 사기는 폭넓은 이해를 지향하고, 인악의 사기는 서술의 치밀성을 엿볼 수 있었다. 다음으로 연담과 인악의 사기를 분석하여 그 사상적 차이를 논하다. 『화엄경소초』의 “모두 얻을 것이 없다(都無所得)”라는 구절에 대한 해석을, 연담은 유식학적 입장에 서 설명하고 인악은 화엄학적 견지에서 설명하다. 연담은 유식을 통하여 현상계의 입장으로 보고 인악은 화엄을 통하여 근본자리인 입장에서 설명한 것으로 이는 그 사상적 견해 차이를 보여주는 서술이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 본고에서는 연담과 인악의 화엄사 기 중에서 일부분만을 살펴보고 그 사상적 견해 차이를 논하지만 나머지 부분 역시 추후 검토해 나가면 두 사람의 견해 차이를 더욱 확연히 알 수 있을 것이다.
