There are some historic sites of the mission stations of U.S. Presbyterian Church around Jeonju and Gunsan of Jeonbuk province and Gwangju, Suncheon, Mokpo, etc of Jeonnam province. The historic sites of the mission stations of buildings which had been constructed during the there. On the whole, the buildings can be classified as hospitals, schools, churches, houses and facilities. The mission stations as places, in which western architecture integrated with modernized medicine and education introduced from U.S. since 1892, had changed the living culture of the local people and served as a motive of modernization and urbanization. Suncheon the first mission stations in Korea were created through the master plan by U.S. Presbyterian Church set up western towns according to their missionary policy as necessary: towns of mission stations, disease- prevention, missionary retreat, etc. The towns of the mission stations on purposes have been until now.

미국 남장로회 선교기지 유적은 전북은 전주와 군산, 전남은 목포, 광주, 순천 등의 도시에 산재되어 있다. 선교기지 유적은 선교 과정에서 구축된 각종 건조물로 볼 수 있는데 크게 병원, 학교, 교회, 주택 그리고 지원시설로 구분할 수 있다. 이러한 선교 유적은 1892년 이후 미국으로부터 전래된 근대 의료와 교육, 서양 건축술 등의 전래 과정이 함축된 공간으로 지역민들의 생활문화 변화와 도시 근대화의 동인으로 작용한다. 특히 미국 남장로회의 순천 선교기지는 종합계획을 통해 구축된 한국 최초의 선교기지로 선교정책과 그 필요에 따라 ‘선교기지 마을’, ‘질병 공동체 마을’, ‘수양관 마을’ 등의 다양한 서양식 마을을 조성했다. 조성 당시 목적에 따라 독자적으로 조성된 선교기지 마을들은 지금까지 고유한 특성을 유지하면서 보전되고 있다.
