This paper aims to explore the problem of 'Yeul(烈)' in Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) in the modernization period. In the modernization period of Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書), the proportion or diversity of the contents related to the passion and fidelity of women was unfavorable compared to previous generations. This can be attributed to the recognition of women's '烈' as a trait that guarantees the moral superiority of the nation / state. In the modernization period of Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書), the '烈 in the narrow sense' is the center, and the '烈 in a large sense' is arranged in various ways. This enlarged the figure of 烈 (1)烈 realized through revenge, (2)烈 spreading to tthe lower class, (3)烈 that is combined with loyalty and impartiality can be typed in that three ways. The expansion of the modernization period of Yeo-Hoon-Seo(女訓書) is a kind of added loyalty to the '烈' idea, which was a one-sided sacrifice of women in pre-modern society. This is to keep women discriminatory systems and ideas in mind, thereby eliminating the benefits that modernization can bring to women and to bear more heavy duties to women.

본고는 근대전환기 女訓書에 나타나는 여성의 ‘烈’의 문제에 대해 탐색해보고자 한다. 근대전환기 여훈서에서 여성의 열행과 정절에 관련된 내용이 차지하는 비중이나 그 다양성은 전대에 비해 유난한 것이었다. 이것은 여성의 ‘열’을 민족/국가의 도덕적 우월성을 보증하는 특성으로 인식하는 것에서 연유하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 근대전환기 여훈서의 열은 ‘협의의 열’이 중심이 된다고 할 수 있으며, 그것을 중심으로 ‘광의의 열’이 다양하게 배치되어 있다. 이렇게 확장된 열의 형상은 (1)복수를 통해 실현되는 烈, (2)하층까지 확산된 烈, (3)忠義와 결합하는 烈로 유형화될 수 있다. 이렇게 확장된 근대전환기 여훈서의 열은 전근대사회에서 여성의 일방적인 희생이었던 ‘열’ 관념에 남성 못지않은 적극성과 공의에 기여하려는 모종의 충성심까지 덧붙여진 형국이다. 이것은 여성차별적인 제도와 관념을 존속시킴으로써 근대화가 여성들에게 가져다줄 수 있는 혜택은 배제한 채 여성에게 더욱 무거운 의무만을 짊어지게 하는 것으로, 근대전환기 여훈서 편자들이 가지고 있는 시대적 한계를 노정한다.
