Picture book is a medium that conveys author’s imagination while helping readers develop aesthetic sensitivity and visual thinking. Children’s picture book—a distinctive genre of books in which visual and verbal narratives are complementary to each other to tell stories—improves children’s reading skills and abilities to understand pictures. In this study, we considered the visual thinking and intertextuality that enrich children’s visual meaning-making and help them appreciate the aesthetic and literary understanding of visuals. We explored the nature of the relationship between picture books and movies and studied the ability to communicate between writers and readers. By analyzing various children’s books of domestic and foreign authors based on visual rhetoric, which is useful for expression of visual narratives, and film-format—a structure that creates immersion and activeness from audiences—we were able to find various experimentality and dynamics of intertextuality. The consideration substituted into visual rhetoric and film-format based on visual narratives will contribute to reaching the core of visual narratives such as persuasion, immersion, and insight, that are essentials in recommending picture books to children.

그림책은 심미감과 함께 시각적 사고력을 키워주며 작가의 상상력이 전이되는 매개체로서 가치가 있다. 어린이 그림책은 어린이들의 읽기능력과 그림의 이해 력을 향상시키는 역할을 하며 글과 그림이 상호보완작 용을 하면서 이야기를 전달하는 고유한 특성의 도서 장르이다. 이번 연구를 통해 어린이의 시각적 의미 구성을 풍 부하게 해주며 그림에 대한 미적 감상과 문학적 이해 에 도움을 주는 시각적 사고와 상호텍스트성을 고찰하 였다. 영화와 그림책의 관계와 속성을 탐색하고 작가 와 독자 사이의 의사소통 기능을 살펴보았다. 시각 서 사 표현에 유용한 시각 수사법과 더불어 구조상 관객 의 적극성과 몰입을 이끌어 주는 도구가 되는 영화형 식을 분석 틀로 삼아 국내외 작가들의 어린이 그림책 을 분석한 결과 상호텍스트성의 다양한 실험성과 역동 성을 확인하게 되었다. 시각 서사를 중시하여 영화 형 식과 비주얼수사학에 대입시킨 고찰은 추천하고 싶은 그림책의 요건이라고 할 수 있는 설득, 몰입, 통찰 등 시각 서사의 핵심에 도달하는데 이바지할 것이다.
