This study examines the web novel “Seolgongchanhwan-honjeon” (Seol Gong-chan's Soul) which was serialized on the Naver site in 2015, to consider the patterns of change that this novel showed as an example of contemporary cultural content when compared to the pre-modern novel Seolgongchanjeon (The Story of Seol Gong-chan). “Seolgongchanhwan-honjeon” adopted the main character of the original novel but presented a story that drastically changed the role of the orignal work. In addition, the web novel created a new character in order to lend probability to the development of events. It was also found that the web novel actively adopted and changed historical figures. At the same time, the web novel accepts some parts of the story of the incarnation of the soul and the world of the dead, in the main events of “Seolgongchanhwan-honjeon” and repeatedly depicts the story of the exile of a ghost that reflects corrupt scandals on the living world based on the event of a homicide. Moreover, the web novel included a romance by resurrecting revenged characters from the dead (known as the attribute of the narrative of the revenged specters). In this manner, there is a change pattern in “Seolgongchanhwan-honjeon” in the course of shedding new light on its original work through a web genre novel which gives a closer intimacy to modern readers as a romance mystery story. In that sense, the adapted work is significant. At the same time, “Seolgongchanhwan-honjeon” is not only relished for pleasure, but also shows the that today's readers can feel empathy, by extending, from a broader perspective, the awareness of problems with life in the world of the living that is shown in Seolgongchanjeon, the original work. In this sense, the web novel is significant.

이 글은 2015년에 네이버 웹소설에 연재되었던 <설공찬환혼전>을 대상으로 이 작품이 원전이 된 고소설 <설공찬전>과 비교해보았을 때 현대 콘텐츠물로서 변모를 보인 양상을 구체적으로 살펴본 것이다. <설공찬환혼전>은 <설공찬전>의 주인공을 수용하되, 기존 작품에서의 역할을 과감하게 역전시키는 설정을 택했으며, 사건전개에 개연성을 부여하기 위해 새로운 인물을 창조했다. 또한 역사적 인물들을 작품 속에 적극적으로 수용 및변화하고 있는 모습이 발견되었다. 동시에 웹소설은 <설공찬전>의 주된사건인 혼령빙의담과 저승소개담을 일정 부분 수용하면서도 추리소설적문제의식을 가지고 권력자의 욕망을 고발하고 약자의 해원을 보여주며, 애정 이상의 삼각구도를 띠고 생과 사의 경계라는 삼분법의 구도를 통해 서사를 구축하고 있었다. 이와 같은 <설공찬환혼전>의 변모 양상은 장르소설로서의 웹소설로 원전 작품을 새롭게 해석해내는 과정에서 이루어진 것으로, 로맨스 미스테리물로서 현대 독자들에게 보다 친숙하게 다가갈 수있게 해주었다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 동시에 단순히 재미추구에서 일시적으로 소비되는 것이 아니라 원전이 된 <설공찬전>이 보여준 이승의 삶에대한 문제의식을 보다 보편적인 문제로 확장시킴으로써 오늘날의 독자들에게 공감할 수 있는 측면을 보여주었다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
