The purpose of this study is to investigate the significance and development direction of the Kim Un-Yong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships. For this purpose, the study reviewed literature on Kim Un-yong and Taekwondo and also the current state, significance, and development direction of the championships, sorting out the findings. The study drew the following conclusions based on the findings: First, two official editions of the championships were held in 2017 and 2018. The overseas branches of the organizing committee have recently held the championships in their resident countries. Secondly, the championships conveys the significance of Taekwondo that is practiced by all kinds of people regardless of gender and age and promotes private diplomacy and tracks the traces of Yungok Kim Un-yong. Finally, the championships should search for a development direction through the continuous management of the organizing committee, utilization of media to increase the recognition of the championships, and strategic sports diplomacy. The championships aim to contribute to mutual harmony and smooth cultural exchanges among various nations while remembering the achievements and contributions to Taekwondo of deceased Kim Un-yong. It is noteworthy that the championships hold significance by tracing his particular affection and efforts for Taekwondo unlike other Taekwondo championships.

이 연구는 김운용컵 국제오픈태권도대회의 의의 및 발전방향을 살펴보는데 그 목적이 있다. 이에 따라 김운용과 태권도, 김운용컵 태권도대회의 현황, 김운용컵 태권도대회 의의, 김운용컵 태권도대회 발전방향으로 구분하여 문헌고 찰을 실시하여 내용을 정리하였다. 이를 통해 도출된 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현재 김운용컵 국제오픈태권도대회는 공식적으로 2017년, 2018년 총 2회 개최된 상황이며, 최근에는 김운용조직위원회 해외지부의 국가들을 중심으로 해 외에서도 김운용컵 국제오픈태권도대회가 유치되고 있다. 둘째, 김운용컵 국제오픈태권도대회는 남녀노소 누구나 수 련하는 태권도, 민간외교의 태권도, 윤곡(允谷) 김운용의 발자취의 의의를 지닌다. 셋째, 앞으로 김운용컵 국제오픈태 권도대회는 지속적인 조직위원회의 관리, 인지도 향상을 위한 미디어 활용, 전략적 스포츠 외교를 통해 발전방향을 모색 해야 한다. 김운용컵 국제오픈태권도대회는 故김운용의 태권도에 대한 업적과 공로를 되새기면서 다양한 국가들이 서 로 화합을 도모하고, 원활한 문화적인 교류가 이루어져야 할 것이다. 김운용컵 국제오픈태권도대회는 다른 태권도대회 와 달리 故김운용의 특별한 태권도에 대한 애정과 노력의 발자취의 의의가 있다는 것에 주목해야 할 것이다.
