This The objective of this study is to define the symbolic meaning of sports in the life of new normal middle-aged adults who are recently the main consumers group and lead cultural trends in Korean society. To that end, through case sampling, 8 male middle-aged adults aged 40 to under 60 were selected as subjects. Data were gathered through talk-like interviews and participatory observation, and their texts were analyzed. To assure the truth of data, diverse approaches, consultation with experts, monitoring tracking, and in-depth description methods were used. Thus, the following results were determined. First, for new normal middle-aged adults, sports were found to have the symbolic meaning of sports as the passage of youth, and to have the sub-category meanings such as vitality more than health, shedding the norm of age, and joyous and thrilling life. Second, sports for new normal middle-aged adults were found to have the symbolic meaning of yet another discovery, and to have the sub-category meanings such as living as diverse identity, new passion and achievement, and affirmative, flexible me. Third, sports had the symbolic meaning of compensation for me, and were found to have the sub-category meanings such as something that is possible during the middle age and the leader and protagonist between generations. Fourth, for new normal middle-aged adults, sports had the symbolic meaning of the rediscovered beginning and were found to have the sub-category meanings such as look for possibilities! and new fence.

본 연구는 최근 한국사회의 주요 소비의 주체이자 문화적 트렌드를 이끌어 나가는 뉴노멀 중년의 삶속에서 스포 츠가 갖는 상징적 의미를 규명하는데 있다. 이러한 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 사례추출방법을 통해 40세 이상 60세 미만의 중년 남성 8명을 연구대상자로 선정하였다. 자료 수집은 이야기식 인터뷰와 참여관찰방법을 사용하였으며 수집 된 자료는 텍스트 분석을 통해 분석하였다. 자료의 진실성을 위해 다각적 접근법, 전문가와의 협의, 감사추적, 심층적 기 술방법을 사용하였다. 이상의 연구방법을 통해 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 첫째 뉴노멀 중년에게 스포츠는 젊음의 통로로서의 스포츠의 상징적 의미를 갖으며 건강 그 이상의 활력, 나이의 규범에서 벗어나기, 즐겁고 설레는 삶의 하위 범주가 분류되었다. 둘째 뉴노멀 중년에게 스포츠는 또 다른 나의 발견의 상징적 의미를 갖으며 다양한 정체성으로 살아 가기, 새로운 열정과 성취, 긍정적이고 유연해진 나의 모습의 하위범주가 분류되었다. 셋째 나의 대한 보상의 상징적 의 미를 갖으며 중년이기에 가능한 것들, 세대 간 주역이자 주인공의 하위범주가 분류 되었다. 넷째 뉴노멀 중년에게 스포 츠는 다시 찾은 시작 의미의 상징적 의미를 갖으며 가능성을 엿보다!, 새로운 울타리의 하위범주가 분류 되었다.
