This paper analyzes how Yeats desired the independence of Ireland and liberty to present the painfully terrible history of Ireland in his play Cathleen ni Houlihan. Dealing with many political events of the past, Cathleen ni Houlihan is not a political play but a historical play. Yeats makes the audience recognize where the historical root of Ireland is, and how many Ireland’s kings and its people have sacrificed their innocent lives in the past to definitely build Ireland’s future. The play is thus the cornerstone of a new way forward by transferring historical persons and places of Ireland to the symbolic figures and the background of his future plays and poems.

이 글은 예이츠가 『캐슬린 니 훌리안』에서 아일랜드의 통렬한 역사를 극작품의 형식으로 재현하여 아일랜드의 독립과 자유를 얼마나 열망했는지를 분석한 다. 필자는 『캐슬린 니 훌리안』이 아일랜드의 정치적 사건을 다룬 정치극이 아닌 역사 극이라고 주장한다. 이는 그가 관객들에게 아일랜드의 역사적 뿌리의 근원은 어디이 며, 과거에 아일랜드의 왕들과 민중들이 아일랜드를 지키기 위하여 그들의 귀중한 생 명을 얼마나 많이 희생시켰는지를 인식하도록 만들어 미래의 아일랜드의 모습을 구체 적으로 그려보도록 만들기 때문이다. 그래서 이 극작품은 이 시기 이후에 창작된 극작 품과 시들에서 아일랜드의 역사적 인물들과 장소들 작품의 배경이나 상징적 인물로 전환되는 새로운 길을 열어주는 주춧돌이 된다.
