Cinema is the greatest cultural medium of our age through which Christianity may communicate with the world. While theology of cinema has been researched in the field of cultural theology, this paper will consider its implications for public theology. Cinematic films invite the audience to experience new realities, provoke empathy and a sense of responsibility, or inspire ways to participate in God’s work on behalf of those who suffer injustice. Cinema’s capacity to envision the future holds critical implications for not only cultural theology but also public theology. Christians who are called to manifest God’s new creation must pay attention to images of dystopian future in films. This paper reflects on cinema’s significance for cultural theology and especially public theology with the framework of missiological hermeneutics by applying the theory of hermeneutical dialogue of David Tracy’s analogical imagination.

영화는 기독교가 세상과 소통할 수 있는 현시대 최고의 문화예술 매체이다. 그동안 영화신학은 주로 문화신학 측면에서 연구되었는데, 본 글은 영화를 공공신학적 측면에서 살피는 데 주안점을 둔다. 즉 관객이 쉽게 주목하지 못하는 현실을 직시하게 하거나, 영화속의 현실을 긍휼의 시선으로 바라보게 하면서 보는 이들의 책임의식을 환기하거나, 부조리한 현실에서 고통당하는 존재들을 위해 세상 안에서 행하시는 하나님의 사역에 동참하도록 촉구하거나, 그러한 참여를 위한 방향까지 제시하기도 한다. 대중문화의 꽃인 영화예술은 그 다양한 역할 중의 하나로서 미래사회를 그려내는 기능이 있는데, 이는 문화신학뿐 아니라 특히 공공신학적 맥락에서 매우 중요한 의미를 띤다. 영화에 나타나는 ‘디스토피아’적 미래 이미지는 하나님의 새로운 창조를 세상에 드러낼 소명을 받은 교회가 관심을 두어야 할 영역이다. 본 글은 영화에 대한 문화신학적, 특히 공공신학적 측면의 의미를 선교해석학의 빛에서 논의하면서 트레이시의 유비적 상상력을 통한 해석학적 대화 이론을 적용하여 살펴본다.
