This research concerns the musicality of moving images by repetition, focusing on the visual music in Norman McLaren's "Canon." I considered the relationships between the technique of the moving images and the musicality in visual music, seeking the production process of "Canon" with regard to how this piece was created. As a research method, I analyzed the three-part omnibus "Canon" by each section. In this paper, I analyzed each section's characteristics of the repetition techniques applied and identify and compare them to the musicality. I attempt to observe and dismantle the work through my own viewpoint rather than through a literature review or via theoretical research, and attempt to discover the meaning of the repetition technique and the musicality in the moving images. Depending on which types of repetition techniques are used in the moving images, creative possibilities and musical expressions are infinite. I hope that this paper can serve as a practical and helpful reference and as an example of the visualization of music with the composition principle of visual music through a repetition technique.

본 연구는 노먼 맥라렌의 비주얼 뮤직 작품 “캐논(Canon)”을 중심으로 ‘반복’기법이 가져다주는 영상의 음악성에 대해 탐구하였다. 연구자는 “캐논”의 제작과정을 살펴보며 본 작품이 어떻게 만들어졌는지에 대해 분석하고 비주얼 뮤직에서의 영상기법과 음악성의 관계를 고찰하였다. 연구방법으로는 3부 옴니버스 형식의 “캐논”을 각 섹션 별로 분석하였다. 본론에서는 섹션 별로 나타난 반복기법을 분석하고, 사용된 반복기법의 특징을 고찰 및 정의하여 음악성과 비교하였다. 문헌이나 이론 연구보다는 연구자의 고유방식을 통해 작품을 관찰하고 해체하여, 반복기법을 데이터화, 도식화하였고, 그 반복기법의 의의는 무엇인지, 어떻게 영상에서 음악성을 모색하였는지를 발견하고자 하였다. 영상에 어떤 반복기법을 사용하느냐에 따라 창의적 가능성과 음악적 표현이 무한하다. 본 논문이 반복기법이 가진 비주얼 뮤직에 대한 구성의 원리와 함께 음악을 시각화한 작품의 한 예시로서 실용적이고 도움이 되는 참고자료로 활용되기를 바란다.
