Yeosan Ryu Byeong-deok (1930~2007) is a representative scholar who founded an academic system of Won-Buddhism as a Won-Buddhist clergyman and a religious scholar. The Society for the Study of Buddhadharma established in 1916 by Sotaesan Park Jung-bin (1891~1943) had claimed to teach and relay buddhadharmas in a manner that was suitable and appropriate for that time, the prevailing lifestyle, and the public at large. After liberation, the Society changed its name to Won-Buddhism and grew into a representative national religion. Ryu Byung-deok called Sotaesan's ideas Il-Won philosophy and made serious and diverse efforts to establish Won-Buddhist studies as an academic system. The key efforts were related to research into relevant studies that serve as the foundation of Won-Buddhist Studies and to perform philosophical and religious analyses on ‘the truth of Il-Won-Sang’ which Sotaesan had realized. Yeosan suggested the need for research on (Eastern) religious studies, new religious studies, and Buddhist studies etc. and presented a variety of research achievements in those fields to establish Won-Buddhist Studies. In this paper, the writer investigated the academic world of Ryu Byeong-deok as well as his view on Buddhism. It is necessary for future researchers who research Won-Buddhist Studies to investigate Yeosan’s academic world which facilitated the beginning of Won-Buddhist Studies. Ryu Byeong-deok's view on Buddhism gives an important clue to understanding and interpreting Won-Buddhism and Won-Buddhist Studies because the problem of interpretation regarding the relationship between Won-Buddhism and Buddhism has not been clearly resolved within the Won-Buddhist order until now.

여산 류병덕(1930~2007)은 원불교의 성직자이자 종교학자로서 원불교학의 학 문적 체계를 정립한 대표적인 학자이다. 소태산 박중빈(1891~1943)에 의하여 1916년에 창교된 불법연구회는 불법의 시대화·대중화·생활화를 표방하였다. 불 법연구회는 해방이후 원불교로 교명을 바꾸면서 대표적인 민족종교로 성장하였 다. 류병덕은 소태산의 사상을 ‘일원철학’으로 명명하고, 원불교학을 하나의 학문적 인 체계로 확립하기 위한 진지하고도 다양한 노력을 기울였다. 그 핵심은 소태산 이 대각한 ‘일원상 진리’에 대한 철학적·종교학적 분석과 더불어 원불교학의 토대 가 되는 관련 학문에 대한 연구라 할 수 있다. 원불교학을 정초하기 위하여 (동양) 종교학, 신종교학, 불교학 등에 대한 연구의 필요성을 제기하고 이에 대한 다양한 연구 성과물을 내놓았다. 본고에서는 이러한 류병덕의 학문세계와 함께 그의 불교관에 대해 조명하였다. 원불교학을 정초한 류병덕의 학문세계에 대한 조명은 원불교학을 연구하는 후속 연구자들에게 반드시 필요한 것이라 할 수 있다. 또한 원불교와 불교와의 관계에 대한 해석의 문제는 현재까지도 교단 내부의 입장이 분명하게 정립되지 않은 문 제여서 류병덕의 불교관은 원불교와 원불교학을 이해하고 해석하는데 중요한 단 초를 준다고 할 수 있다.
