Ryu Byeong-deok achieved remarkable accomplishments in the fields of philosophy, religious studies and history of thought as well as Won-Buddhism. He made theoretical distinctions between concepts such as ‘quasi religion,’ ‘newly-arising religion,’ and ‘new religion,’ and separated the concepts of a ‘national religion (minjok chonggyo)’ and a ‘general people’s religion (minjung chonggyo).’ He argued for the concept of a ‘national general-people’s religion (minjok minjung chonggyo)’ and suggested how it might be put into practice. Such undertakings were closely related closely with his views on religions. This paper analyzed his views on religions focusing on the concepts of ‘general-people’s religion,’ and the ‘religion of Practical Learning (silhak chonggyo).’ The ‘religion of general people’ has an importance in relation with Ryu Byeong-deok’s perspective or attitude on his religious study, and the ‘religion of Practical Learning’ in relation with the orientation of his studies. He uncovered the meaning, significance or essence of a creative religion that is not bound to any particular nation or country through the concept of the general people’s religion. Furthermore, he, through discussions on the thinking behind Practical Learning and the Practical Learning of practice (silch’ŏn silhak), suggested an orientation of a religion of Practical Learning.

류병덕은 원불교학 뿐만 아니라, 철학, 종교학, 사상사 분야에 현저한 업적을 남 긴 바 있다. 류병덕은 ‘유사종교’, ‘신흥종교’, ‘신종교’의 개념을 이론적으로 변별 (辨別)하였을 뿐만 아니라, ‘민족종교’와 ‘민중종교’의 개념을 구별(區別)하면서 ‘민족적 민중종교’ 개념을 주창(主唱)함으로써 실천적 방향을 제시하였다. 류병덕 의 이러한 시도는 그의 종교관과 밀접한 관련을 지닌 것이었다. 필자는 류병덕의 종교관을 ‘민중종교’와 ‘실학종교’개념을 중심으로 분석하였 다. ‘민중종교’는 류병덕의 종교연구의 관점 혹은 태도와 관련하여, ‘실학종교’는 류병덕 학문의 지향점과 관련하여 중요성을 지닌다. 류병덕은 ‘민중종교’ 개념을 통해서 ‘민족’ 혹은 ‘국가’에 묶이지 않는 창조적 종교의 향배를 읽어냈다. 류병덕 은 또한 ‘실학사상’과 ‘실천실학’에 대한 논의를 통해 ‘실학종교’의 방향성을 제시 하였다.
