In Feminism, the notion of ‘the material’ has evaporated from the mainstream discourse a long time ago. Materiality is regarded as a contaminated domain for the feminist discourses since the concept of the dichotomy of culture-nature, mind-body, reason-emotion established itself as the mainstream in Western culture and unfairly demanded that women be connected to only one side of each pair. Most past attempts made by feminists to dissolve the dichotomization proved futile. Nevertheless, recently, such efforts have been rekindled as concerns for the material reality including women’s body, nature, artefacts, and have begun to gain momentum. Advocates of the 'new feminist materialism’ or ‘material feminism’ seek for a new ‘engagement’ with ‘the material’. While making an ‘ontological turn’, they bring the material (e.g. human body) into focus. The advocates try to initiate and enrich discussions on biology, neuroscience, and medical technology (e.g. plastic surgery and obesity science study). In this paper, I try to engage the readers in the discourse of the materiality of feminism by borrowing from the arguments of renowned feminists and critics of science. I conclude with some suggestions for the possible future direction of research as well as its implications.

현대 페미니즘의 논의 지형에서 ‘물질’의 이슈는 특이하게도 휘발성을 보여 왔는데, 우리는 그 이유에 대해 생각해 볼 필요가 있다. 서구의 지적 전통에서 문화-자연, 마음-물질, 이성-감성이라는 이분법이 오래 유지되어 왔고 그 쌍 중 늘 한쪽이 여성에게 귀속되어 왔다. 이런 이원화에 대한 반감과 관련되어, 물질성이 일종의 오염된 영역이라는 편견이 페미니스트에게 은연중 작동하였고, 그로부터 최대한 이탈하여 문화와 언어에 대한 담론 내로 페미니스트들이 도피하고자 했기 때문으로 보인다. 그러나 최근 오히려 인간과 비인간, 사물과 육체를 포괄하는 물질적 실재에 대한 관심이 페미니즘 안에서 고조되고 있다. 새로운 페미니스트 물질주의는 종래의 유물론적 페미니즘보다 더 ‘물질적인 것’에 주목하며 물질과의 새로운 ‘관계맺기’를 지향한다. 이러한 정위는 인간의 육체와 삶의 물질적 측면에 대해 주목하는 일종의 ‘존재론적 전회’이기도 하다. 새로운 물질주의 페미니스트들은 의료기술과 생물학과 같은 테크노사이언스와 직접 교류하며, 육체에 더욱 분석의 초점을 맞추기도 한다. 이 글은 물질적 페미니즘이 주목하는 물질성 중에서 자연과 사물에 대해 초점을 맞춰 논의를 전개한다. 페미니스트 과학론 안에서 새로운 물질주의적 논의구도가 어떻게 변화되어 왔는지, 테크노사이언스에 대해 어떤 방향 제시가 가능하며 그 의의는 무엇일지에 대해 진단하고자 한다.
