Both cognitive science and phenomenology concern investigations into the nature of cognition. But there is a surprising and perplexing matter between them. That is, although both of them deal with the common topic such as “the nature of cognition and mind”, as far as actual research is concerned, there are hardly mutual communications and cooperations between them. In this problematic situation, so as to uncover the possible communication between cognitive science and phenomenology, we now raise these questions: Is it really possible to connect contemporary cognitive science to the classical Husserlian phenomenology? If so, how is it possible? Among some recent philosophical strategies that aim to resolve this matter, I adopt the view that we can connect the two academic disciplines by means of positing a new alternative form of phenomenology. In this regard I claim that connecting contemporary cognitive science to the classical phenomenology is possible when we (i) clarify, from the perspectives of cognitive science and phenomenology, the concept of phenomenon which has rather several meanings, (ii) lay bare a proper alternative form of phenomenology compatible with cognitive science; and (iii) supplement an additional, methodological apparatus that can combine such alternative phenomenology with the classical phenomenology. If this inquiry is successful, it will make us free from unnecessary misunderstandings and biases on those two disciplines, and provide us with a new basis for mutual communication between them.

인지과학과 현상학 모두 인지의 본성을 규명하는 일에 관여한다. 그런데 그들 사이에 놀랍고 당혹스러운 문제가 있다. 즉 그 둘 모두 ‘인지와 마음의 본성’이라는 공통 주제를 다루지만 실제 연구를 수행하는데 있어서 그들 사이에는 상호 대화와 협력이 거의 없다는 사실이다. 이렇게 그 두 분야 사이에는 매우 거대한 간극이 있는 것으로 보인다. 그러면 그 간극을 메우는 일이 가능할까? 만일 그렇다면, 우리는 그 간극을 실제로 어떻게 메워야 하는가? 이 문제를 해결하고자 하는 여러 철학적 전략 중, 필자는 어떤 대안적 현상학을 활용하여 현대 인지과학과 고전적 현상학을 매개하는 방법을 제안한다. 좀 더 구체적으로 말하여 이 논문에서 필자는, 인지과학과 현상학 사이의 거대한 간극을 메우는 일이 (i) 여러 다양한 의미를 갖는 ‘현상’ 개념을 인지과학과 현상학 각각의 측면에서 명료화하고, (ii) 인지과학과 양립할 수 있는 ‘대안적 현상학’의 이념을 분명히 한 뒤, (iii) 그 대안적 현상학을 ‘특정한 현상학적 원리’를 통하여 고전적 현상학과 이음으로써 가능하다고 주장하고자 한다. 이 논의가 성공적일 경우 우리는 현상학과 인지과학 사이에서 발생하는 불필요한 오해와 편견에서 벗어나 그 둘을 학문적으로 연결할 수 있는 새로운 입각지를 확보할 수 있을 것이다.
