Crime analysis refers to the set of systematic, analytical processes that provide timely and pertinent information about crime patterns and crime trend correlations. As crimes are intelligent, it is limited to solve only through the use of criminal confessions and witness' testimony. Furthermore, it is becoming more important to secure elaborate forms of evidence, to cope with intelligent crimes, and to prepare effective crime prevention policies. Recent developments in criminological theory have encouraged crime analysts to focus on geographic patterns of crime; examining situations in which victims and offenders come together in time and space. Crime analysis is enabled to assist with supporting analysis data, resolving long-term cold cases, and suggesting methods of crime prevention through environmental design. The first method of crime analysis involves confirming the Corpus delicti. Subsequently, the crime analysis programs are applied to the Corpus delicti in order to produce valuable information. In addition, varied crime analysis software's are used to increase accuracy and reliability. There are four types of crime analysis; Tactical Crime Analysis, Strategic Crime Analysis, Administrative Crime Analysis, and Police Operations Analysis. In South Korea, to effectively activate the use of crime analysis, it is necessary to secure crime analysis experts, develop special crime analysis methods, and to deploy the policing resources (particularly crime analysts) effectively.

빅데이터 분석, 인공지능, 사물인터넷(IoT)과 같은 첨단 분야와 이의 상호 융합이라 는 4차 산업혁명은 단순한 경제 발전으로 그치는 것이 아니라 사회적·문화적 변동을 유발하고 있으며 이의 부정적 영향으로서 첨단 지능 범죄, 사생활 침해와 정보유출 등 각종 범죄들이 나타나고 있다. 첨단 분야를 이용한 범죄분석은 범죄에 대한 구조적 연구를 통하여 범죄 수사관의 범죄자 체포, 치안 유지, 범죄 예방과 평가를 적절히 수 행하기 위한 전문 영역으로 성장하고 있다. 최근의 범죄가 점차 지능화 되어 더 이상 범인의 자백이나 목격자의 증언에 의존하여 범죄 문제를 해결하는 수사 방식은 많은 한계를 노출하게 되었다. 4차 산업혁명 시대의 지능범죄에 대한 대처뿐 아니라 정교한 증거 확보의 수단, 효과적인 범죄 예방대책 마련을 위해서도 범죄분석의 도움을 받는 것이 필요하다. 범죄수사상 범죄분석의 중요성이 날로 심화되는 상황에서 이의 학문적 논의와 연구 성과가 선행되어야 한다는 점에서 본고가 많은 시사점을 줄 수 있으리라 생각된다.
