This paper proposes a research methodology to study the phonological phenomena that can be observed in the Hangul letters, namely Eon-gan. Eon-gan constitutes historical data which can be used not only in the study of phonological phenomena but also of any other aspects of the modern Korean language. Nevertheless, few studies have been using quantitative methodology to date because the nature of this data makes it difficult to read it and to construct a corpus. The process of build a corpus of the Joseon Dynasty Eon-gan has been carried out in three steps: 1) the preliminary phase; 2) the construction phase; and 3) the analysis phase. A quantitative aroach was adopted to analyse the Joseon Dynasty Eon-gan Corpus and investigate the dephonologization of ‘ㆍ’ (arae a). In addition to the dephonologization of ‘ㆍ’ (arae a), the Joseon Dynasty Eon-gan Corpus built for this study and the quantitative research methodology proposed in this paper could be used in the study of other major phonological phenomena that took place in the modern Korean language, such as palatalization, vowel rounding and liquidization, in order to obtain new, significant results.

이 글은 언간에 나타나는 음운현상을 계량적으로 연구하는 방법론을 모색해 보고자 하였다. 언간은 음운현상 연구뿐 아니라 근대국어 연구 전반에 활용할 수 있는 역사 자료이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 계량적인 방법론을 활용한 언간 연구가 많지 않은 것은 언간이 자료 특성상 내용 판독 및 말뭉치 구축이 어렵기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 조선시대 언간 말뭉치를 구성하기 위해서 예비 작업, 구축 작업, 분석 작업의 세 단계로 나누어서 작업 과정을 진행하였고 그 결과로 생성된 조선시대 언간 말뭉치를 활용하여 근대국어의 ‘ㆍ’ 비음운화를 계량적인 연구 방법론을 적용하여 살펴보았다. ‘ㆍ’의 비음운화 외에도 구개음화, 원순모음화, 유음화 등 근대국어 시기의 주요한 음운현상들도 이 연구를 위해 구축한 조선시대 언간 말뭉치와 계량적 연구 방법론을 활용하면 유의미한 결과를 얻을 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
