This article aims to study on the historical change of the pre-final ending ‘-리 (ri)-’ and suggest a direction for future research. Chapter 2 examines ‘-리 (ri)-’ appearing in meaning-indicator-system Kugyol(Seogdok Kugyol) and hyangga and discusses the possibility of ‘이(i)’ not being combined (with ‘-리 (ri)-’) in the original construction and the uncertain status of ‘-리 (ri)-’ as an pre-final ending. Chapter 3 reviews the distribution, form, and function of Middle Korean ‘-리 (ri)-,’ with a focus on the 15th century, In Middle Korean, such pre-final endins as ‘-거 (geo)-’ and ‘-더 (deo)-’ come either before or after ‘-리 (ri)-.’ If ‘-리 (ri)-’ appearing in awkward noun sentences in Middle Korean is considered, it can be said that both the pre-ending feature and the final-ending feature are also included in ‘-리 (ri)-’. However, it is suggested that the two cannot be distinguished because there is no functional difference between the pre-ending and the final-ending. Moreover, Middle Korean ‘-리 (ri)’ has not only ‘probability’ and ‘intention’, which are the main functions of Contemporary Korean ‘-겠 (gyett)-,’ but also ‘prospective’, which is the function of ‘-ㄹ 것이 (l geosi)-.’ Among these, ‘prospective’ is more of tense showing a temporal locaton, and prophesies and context of duty are expressed frequently in the world of religious belief. Accordingly, ‘리 (ri)-’ with the function of ‘prospective’ occurs frequently. As for the decline of ‘-리 (ri)-’, the chapter suggests that, in form, ‘리 (ri)’ is contracted to ‘ㄹ’. becomes ultimately part of the conjunctive ending and the final ending, and is replaced with other pre-final endings or pre-final constructions. Finally, the article stresses that, although ‘-리 (ri)-’ has been extensively discussed directly and indirectly, there still is a room for a closer examination of it and, in particular, a need for a more precise statistic research on the historical process of its decline.

이 논문은 선어말어미 ‘-리-’의 역사적 변화 모습을 고찰하고 추후 연구의 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 2장에서는 석독구결과 향가에 나타나는 ‘리’의 모습에 대하여 고찰하였는데 기원적인 구성에 형식명사 ‘이’가 결합되어 있지 않았을 개연성과 선어말어미로서의 지위가 불확실하다는 것을 논의하였다. 3장에서는 15세기를 중심으로 중세국어 ‘-리-’의 분포와 형태, 그리고 기능을 살펴보았다. 중세국어에서 ‘-거-’, ‘-더-’ 등의 선어말어미는 ‘-리-’에 선행하기도 하고 후행하기도 한다. 그리고 중세국어의 기형적 명사문에 나타나는 ‘-리-’까지를 고려하면 중세국어 ‘-리-’ 역시 선어말어미와 선어말 구성의 두 성격을 모두 내재하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 하지만 기능적으로는 선어말어미와 선어말 구성이 차이가 없기 때문에 이 둘을 구분할 수 없다고 보았다. 그리고 중세국어 ‘-리-’는 현대국어 ‘-겠-’의 주요 기능인 ‘추정’과 ‘의도’는 물론이고, 주로 ‘-ㄹ 것이-’가 나타내는 ‘예정’의 기능을 모두 가진다. 이중 ‘예정’은 시간적인 위치를 나타내는 시제적인 성격이 강한데 종교적 믿음 세계 안에서 예언과 당위적 문맥이 많이 표현되기 때문에 이러한 ‘예정’의 기능을 보이는 ‘-리-’가 많이 보인다. 4장의 ‘-리-’의 쇠퇴와 관련하여서는 형태적으로 ‘리’가 ‘ㄹ’로 줄어들고 결국에는 연결어미나 종결어미의 일부로 녹아드는 것과 다른 선어말어미나 선어말 구성으로 대체된다는 것을 설명하였다. ‘-리-’에 관한 직간접적인 논의가 많이 이루어졌음에도 아직 정밀하게 고찰되어야 할 부분이 많이 있는데 특히 ‘-리-’의 쇠퇴 과정에 대한 더욱 정밀하고 통계적인 연구가 필요함을 강조하였다.
