The purpose of this qualitative research was to examine the internship experiences of music therapists in a psychiatric department. To gather the data, the researcher conducted individual interviews to explore the internship experiences of 10 Korean music therapists in a psychiatric department. After the data were analyzed using consensual qualitative research, four domains and 18 categories were generated about participantsʼ internship experiences. The results showed that the participants had various emotional reactions such as anxiety or excitement prior to their internships, but they also improved their clinical skills and knowledge about psychiatric patients. In the realm of positive experiences, they witnessed their clientsʼ changes and were able to gain help from supervisors, unit staff, and peers. Their difficult experiences were related to lack of skills, countertransference, conflicts with staff, and confusion about their roles in the unit. It is hoped that this qualitative research may provide useful information about how music therapy interns need to be prepared before their internships and how they establish their professional identities during their internships. In addition, it is hoped that this study may assist intern supervisors to understand their internsʼ positive and negative experiences in a psychiatric department.

이 연구는 음악치료사들의 정신건강의학과 인턴쉽 경험을 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 연구자는 음악치료사 10명을 대상으로 하여 그들의 정신건강의학과 인턴쉽 경험에 대한 심층면담을 진행한 뒤 합의적 질적 연구 방법으로 분석하여 결과를 도출하였다. 그 결과 ʻ시작 전 경험,ʼ ʻ의미 있는 경험,ʼ ʻ어려움 경험ʼ 그리고 ʻ성장의 경험ʼ으로 총 4개의 영역과 18개의 하위범주가 도출되었다. 음악치료사들은 정신건강의학과 인턴쉽을 통하여 음악치료적 개입 기술과 정신건강의학과 입원 환자 및 동료에 대한 이해가 증진되는 등 치료사로서 전문성 성장을 경험하였다는 것을 확인하였다. 이 연구는 정신건강의학과라는 고유한 특성을 가진 기관에서 음악치료 훈련생들이 어떠한 경험을 하고 전문성을 획득하는지에 대해 고찰했다는 것에 의의가 있으며, 앞으로 정신건강의학과에서 인턴쉽을 진행하게 될 훈련생들에게 전문성 발달에 대한 기초 자료로 제공하고자 한다.
