This paper is to analyze the problem and cause of various buddhist orders of Korean Buddhism. Since Korean liberation, new buddhist orders have been made now up to about five hundreds and still continue to increase. Therefore it is important to analyze the social background and cause of increase of Buddhist orders, which were only eighteen before 1988. The main reason of increase of religious orders may be different by researchers. However, I would like to suggest four elements for it. First, it is the conflict and division between the Chogye order and T'aego order, the representative orthodox orders of Korean Buddhism. Second, it is the fact that it was not difficult to establish religious orders by the asset management law of Buddhism in 1988. Hence, new religious orders increased after then. Third, the asset management and human resources of each religious order is a premodern way. Therefore, the division was made by different perspectives. Forth, the shamanistic buddhist orders gradually increase. The devotees following shamans play a major role to build the new buddhist orders of Buddhism. The appearance of new religious orders can be understood as a very positive phenomenon in terms of promoting a new Buddhist movement. However, there are also many issues practically. Although there are many newly established buddhist orders, their religious identification is quite obscure in the point that “Are they the real buddhists?". Moreover, they may not only make the believers confuse the identification of what the real Buddhism is, but also aggravate the distortion of Buddhism. Furthermore, we may lose the social trust on Buddhism. These problems can give a harmful influence to the sound development of Buddhism, so we need to be careful to consider it.

이 논문은 한국불교계의 종단난립과 그 원인, 그에 따른 문제점이 무엇인가를 분석하고자 한다. 해방 이후 증가하기 시작한 신흥종단은 현재 5백여 개의 종단에 이르고 있으며, 지금도 계속 새로운 종단이 파생되고 있는 것으로 본다. 특히 1988년 이전에는 18개에 불과하던 불교계의 종단이 급증하게 된 사회적 배경과 원인이 무엇인가를 분석하는 일은 더없이 중요하지 않을 수 없다. 많은 종단이 짧은 기간에 급증하게 된 원인은 연구자에 따라 다양하게 분석할 수 있을 것이다. 그렇지만 본고에서는 네 가지 정도로 분석한다. 첫째는 한국불교를 대표한 정통종단인 조계종과 태고종의 갈등과 분열이다. 둘째는 1988년 불교재산관리법의 폐지와 동시에 종단을 수립하는 일이 어렵지 않게 되었다는 점이다. 따라서 이후 신흥종단이 급증하게 된다. 셋째 각 종단의 인사 및 재무관리가 전근대적이란 점이다. 이에 따라 이해가 충돌하면서 분파의 여지를 만들게 된다. 넷째 무속계통의 종단이 점증하고 있다는 점이다. 巫俗人들을 따르는 신도들을 중심으로 불교계의 신흥종단으로 활동하는 점 등이다. 신흥종단이 등장하는 것은 새로운 불교운동을 모색한다는 차원에서 보면 매우 긍정적으로 이해할 수 있지만 신도들의 건전한 신행활동에 저해요인이 된다는 점, 불교에 대한 사회적 신뢰감을 상실할 우려가 크다는 점, 불교의 무속화로 사회적 악폐를 양산할 수 있다는 점 등 부정적인 요인이 많다. 신흥종단이 난립하고 있지만, 이들이 불교적인가 하는 점에서 불교적 정체성이 모호하다는 점이다. 긍정적인 요인 보다는 부정적인 요인이 많다는 점에서 이에 대한 대책이 시급하다고 본다. 불교에 대한 사회적 왜곡을 심화시킬 수 있다는 점이다. 이런 문제점들은 불교계의 각 종단이 유의하지 않으면 건전한 발전을 도모할 수 없다는 점에서 매우 중요하다고 본다.
