Lee Yeo-bak inherited and developed the study of his father that investigated the Silhak ideas by having exchanges with the representative Silhak scholars of his time. He was especially committed to the study of promoting public welfare. He exhibited his profound knowledge about astronomy by making astronomical instruments and charts and manufactured and operated a Western-style waterwheel called Yongmicha. These works of his were based on his advanced math knowledge. Recognizing that math was the basic field of study in the management of national affairs, arrangement of culture, and economic activities, he rebuked the nation for its negligence of math. He wrote Isuwonryu, a collection of 16 math books, and transcribed them to his friends. The volumes were divided into main and additional ones: the former covered the basic principles of math, and the latter covered astronomy, geography, science of finance, hydrography and other applied fields of math. The books have not been discovered yet only with the preface and table of contents remaining. The present study will hopefully lead to the original copies being open to the public.

이여박은 당대의 대표적인 실학자들과 교유하며 실학사상을 연구한 부친의 학문을계승·발전시켰는데, 그 가운데서도 利用厚生의 학문에 정진하였다. 그는 우선 천문기기를 만들고 천문도를 그리는 등 천문학에 조예가 깊었고, 용미차라는 서양식 수차를 만들어 가동하였다. 이러한 일은 고도의 수학 지식을 토대로 한 것이었는데, 그는 국가경영이나 문물정비 및 경제활동에 기초가 되는 학문이 수학인데 근래 경시되고 있는 실태를질타하며 『이수원류』라는 16권짜리 수학책을 집필하여 지인들에게 필사해주었다. 이를본법과 별법으로 나누어 본법에는 수학의 기초원리를 담고, 별법에는 천문학·지리학·재정학·수리학 등 수학의 적용학문을 담았다. 하지만 현재 『이수원류』은 발견되지 않고그 서문과 목차만이 남아 있을 뿐이어서 이 글을 계기로 원본이 세상에 공개되기를 기대한다.
