The purpose of the study was to provide the distinction between two terminology, the general agricultural education and the agricultural literacy, based on the results of researching the origins and the contents of those technical terms. To achieve the purpose of the study, history, needs, definitions, area of contents, and its’ subelement were investigated, compared, and analyzed. The conclusions of the study were as follows;First, there were big differences in history and needs between the general agricultural education and the agricultural literacy. Second, the definitions of the general agricultural education and the agricultural literacy were very different. The definition of the general agricultural education was ‘knowledge of, skills of, and attitude toward agriculture’. On the other, the definition of the agricultural literacy was limited to ‘knowledge and understanding of agriculture.’ Third, there were no big differences in the contents and its’ subelement between the general agricultural education and the agricultural literacy. There was only difference in specifications in describing the contents and its’ subelement of the general agricultural education and the agricultural literacy due to their purposed and needs.

이 연구의 목적은 우리나라에서 사용되고 있는 교양농업교육과 농업문해의 기원 및 내용을 조사 분석하여 두 용어의 차별성을 제공하는데 있었다. 이 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 우리나라에서의 교양농업교육과 농업문해의 역사, 필요성, 정의, 그리고 내용영역 및 하위요소를 조사하고 비교 분석하였다. 이 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우리나라의 교양농업교육과 농업문해는 그 역사와 필요성에 있어서 그 차이가 매우 크다. 둘째, 교양농업교육과 농업문해의 정의는 매우 상이하다. 교양농업교육의 정의는 ‘농업에 대한 기본적인 지식, 기술, 태도’이고 농업문해에는 ‘농업에 대한 지식과 이해’로 제한되어 있다. 셋째, 교양농업교육과 농업문해의 내용영역을 비교 분석한 결과 두 용어의 내용영역에는 큰 차이가 없다. 교양농업교육의 내용영역은 우리나라 교양교육적 성격을 반영한 반면 농업문해의 내용영역은 농업정책의 개발과 실행을 위하여 알아야 하는 내용이기 때문에 다르게 표현되었을 뿐이다.
