The only divided nation-states on the earth are on the Korean peninsula. Accordingly, the unification of our historical mission and task of the times. And yet, as recently, South Korean society has transformed to a multicultural society, the emphasis on nationalism or national identity till now in the discussion about unification is considered a concept in contrast to multiculturalism. The discussion about pureblood custom or jus sanguinis is even criticized as a vice of old times, which has been taken for granted as one of the cultural traditions of Korean society. And yet, the emphasis on nationalism or national identity has been the force for the historical task of unification, which binds us together. This is because the awareness of sympathy of being one nation acts on the base of the consideration of South Korea and North Korea as two countries, even if heterogeneity between South Korea and North Korea deepens, and political/military opposition becomes fierce. In Korean society, the task of overcoming the division of the nation, which has continued for about 70 years and the problem of having to integrate the multicultural members that have gradually been increasing internally coexist. Multicultural situation and multiculturalism are the issues that cannot be missed in discussing changes in Korean society in the future, and they will gradually increase. At the same time, changes in the relationship between South Korea and North Korea, too, are the most fundamental parts. Thus, to prepare unification in line with the change of the age of multiculturalism, it is necessary to seek measures for establishing coexistence and social integration, instead of the exclusive, conflicting relationship between nationalism and multiculturalism we should pursue.

한반도는 지구상에서 유일한 민족분단국가이다. 그렇다보니 민족통일은 한반도 평화를 위한 우리의 역 사적 사명이라고 수 있다. 하지만 최근 한국사회가 다문화사회로 변화되면서 통일논의에서 중요시해 왔던 민족주의나 민족 정체성에 대한 강조는 다문화주의와는 반대되는 개념으로 여겨지고 있다. 그동안 우리가 자랑스럽게 여겨왔던 반만년 단일민족의 역사와 순혈주의･혈통주의에 대한 논의를 구시대의 악습으로까 지 비판하기도 한다. 그러나 우리가 그동안 강조해 온 민족주의나 민족 정체성에 대한 강조는 통일이라는 역사적 과업을 위한 힘이 되어 왔다. 남북 간의 이질화가 심화되고 정치･군사적 대립이 격화되어도 남과 북 을 두 개의 국가로 간주하지 않는 바탕에는 같은 민족이라는 의식이 작용하고 있기 때문이다. 한국사회는 70년 넘게 이어져 온 분단의 고통을 극복해야 하는 과제와 최근 들어 점차 늘어나는 다문화 구성원의 안정 적이고 효율적인 정착을 위한 과제가 공존하고 있다. 다문화상황, 다문화주의는 앞으로 한국사회의 변화를 논할 때 빠뜨릴 수 없는 쟁점이 될 것이며 그 중요성 또한 점점 더 커질 것이다. 동시에 남북관계의 변화 역시 한반도의 미래를 예측하고 통일을 대비하는 데 있어서 매우 중요한 부분이다. 따라서 다문화시대로의 변화 를 겪고 있는 현 상황에서 통일에 대비하기 위해서는 우리가 추구해야 할 민족주의와 다문화주의가 서로 갈 등하고 반목하는 배타적인 관계가 아닌 상호 공존하고 화합하며 사회적 통합을 이룰 수 있는 방안을 모색하는 것이 필요하다.
