This paper reviews various Korean translations of Kenji Miyazawa’s “Night on the Galactic Railroad” to discuss different translation patterns and strategies for the naming of plants and objects, with suggestions for more suitable alternatives, when necessary. Translator Shim Jong-suk (2004) suggested appropriate Korean options for the names of plants in her translations of the terms ‘snake gourd (烏瓜)’ as ‘karasuri (카라스우리)’, ‘yew tree (いちい)’ as ‘Jumok Namu (주목나무)’, ‘Japanese fir (もみ)’ as ‘Ilbon Jeonnamu (일본전나무)’, and ‘silver grass (もみ)’ as ‘Eoksae (억새)’ in Korean. In terms of the names of objects, Hara Shiro explained that ‘lamp with a shade (ラムプｼｪｰﾄ)’ should be translated as ‘Jageun Chayangyi Dallin Laemp (작은 차양이 달린 램프)’ in Korean. It also seems appropriate that other Korean translators including Yi Seon-hee (2001, 2013), Kim Nan-ju and Park Kyeong-hee, translated the word ‘engine (罐)’ as ‘Gigwan (기관)’ in Korean. Korean translations for ‘copper (銅)’ would be ‘Guri (구리)’ or ‘Dong (동)’. In case of the word ‘Centaurus (人馬)’, as translators Park Kyeong-hee, Park Jeong-im and Kim Dong-geun suggested, ‘Kentaurus (켄타우루스)’ or ‘Banin Banma Kentaurus (반인반마 켄타우루스)’ would be suitable options for the Korean translation. The Japanese word for ‘velvet (天鵞絨 or びろうど)’ was properly translated in the versions by such translators as Yi Seon-hee, Park Kyeong-hee and Park Jeong-im. The Korean word ‘Notswe (놋쇠)’ would be an appropriate substitute for the Japanese word for ‘brass (真鍮)’. Translators of Night on the Galactic Railroad need strategies to deliver to the readers the accurate meaning of the original text. Suggested strategies include reviewing preceding research about the literary world that the original Japanese version of Night on the Galactic Railroad envisages, by referring to such publications as The Original Edition of Kenji Miyazawa’s Lexicons (by Hara Shiro) and The Unabridged Dictionary for Kenji Miyazawa Books (by Watanabe Yoshinori). Additionally, acquiring professional knowledge from reference books on the names of the plants and objects in question would create a solid base for the ability to choose appropriate translations with an in-depth understanding of Night on the Galactic Railroad.

일한번역본 『은하철도의 밤』에 나타난 식물명, 물건명에 대해서 번역양상 및 번역전략에 대해서 고찰해 보았다. 식물명의 경우는 심종숙(2004)이 일본어 ‘烏瓜’를 한국어로 ‘카라스우리’로, ‘いちい’는 ‘주목나무’로, ‘もみ’는 ‘일본전나무’로, ‘すすき’는 억새로 번역하는 것이 적절하다. 물건명의 경우는 ‘ラムプｼｪｰﾄﾞ’를 하라 시로오씨의 해설대로 ‘작은 차양이 달린 램프’라고 번역하는 것이 적절하다고 본다. ‘罐’은 ‘기관’이라고 표현한 이선희 역(2001,2013), 김난주 역, 박경희 역이 가장 적절한 번역이다. ‘銅’은 우리말의 ‘구리’ 혹은 ‘동’이라는 번역이 적절하다. 일본어‘人馬’를 박경희 역, 박정임 역, 김동근 역처럼 ‘켄타우루스’ 혹은 ‘반인반마 켄타우루스’라는 번역이 적절하다. 일본어 ‘天鵞絨(びろうど)’는 이선희 역, 박경희 역, 박정임 역이 적절하다. 일본어‘真鍮’는 ‘놋쇠’라고 번역하는 것이 적절하다. 『은하철도의 밤』을 번역할 경우 『銀河鉄道の夜』의 작품세계에 대한 선행연구, 하라 시로오 『정본 이와자와 겐지 어휘사전』, 와타베 요시노리『미야자와 겐지 대사전』 등의 검토를 통해 독자에게 정확히 전달하려는 번역전략이 필요하다고 본다. 또한 『은하철도의 밤』에 등장하는 식물명과 물건명과 관련된 참고서를 펼쳐 전문적 지식을 쌓으면 작품을 더 깊이 이해할 수 있어 좋은 번역의 바탕이 될 수 있다고 생각한다.
