This study introduces and shares an example of an interdisciplinary course in oral history and theater held in the first semester of 2018 at K University. We have been thinking about the limitation of oral history arising from the fact that it is written and used by letters. In order to overcome this limitation, we conducted an experimental class in which we produced a verbatim theatre play that combined oral history and play. It was a class specifically on conducting interviews with descendants of Korean independence activists and making a play based on these interviews. The interviewees were the descendants of Kim Kyu-sik, Yun Bong-gil, Lee Hoe-yeong, Jung Jeong-hwa and Jo So-ang. Five history students and ten theatre students attended the class. They were divided into five groups. Each group consisted of one history student and two theatre students. The groups explored the life of an independence activist, interviewed with his or her descendant, and made a script for a 10-minute play. And they themselves performed the play on stage. The interviewees attended the performance and shared the meaning of the play which represented their voices with the students and audiences. This work has been highly successful in the following respects. First, it is not only possible but also effective to deliver oral history not by letters but by oral representation. Second, the verbatim theatre which uses transcripts of oral history interviews could be a very useful and effective means of overcoming the alienation of interviewees and honoring their lives with many audiences. Third, the performance of oral history could be effectively linked to the accumulation of interview data. Fourth, the link between oral history and education could achieve positive effects not only on history education but also on social education, practical education, emotional education and communication between generations.

본 연구는 2018년도 1학기 구술사와 연극 융합수업의 사례를 소개하고 그 경험을공유하기 위한 것이다. 필자는 구술이 문자로써 표현되고 이용되는 데서 발생하는 한계에 대해 고민해왔다. 이를 극복하기 위해서 구술사와 연극을 결합하는 버바텀 연극(verbatim theatre)을 제작하는 실험 수업을 진행하였다. 구체적으로 독립운동가 후손들의 구술을 채록하여 이를 연극으로 만드는 수업이었다. 구술자는 독립운동가 김규식, 윤봉길, 이회영, 정정화, 조소앙의 후손들이었다. 수업에 참여한 학생들은 역사전공 5명, 연극전공 10명의 학생들이었다. 학생들은한국사전공 1명, 연극전공 2명이 한 팀이 되어 총 5개 팀으로 나뉘었다. 각 팀은 한명의 독립운동가의 생애를 탐구하고 그 후손들을 인터뷰하여 10분짜리 공연을 위한대본을 만들었다. 그리고 직접 무대에서 공연까지 수행하였다. 공연 자리에는 구술자들이 참석하여 자신들의 목소리를 재현한 작품을 통해 그 의미를 학생들과 관객과 함께 나누었다. 이 작업은 다음과 같은 점에서 대단히 성공적이었다. 첫째, 구술을 문자가 아니라구술로 전달하는 것이 가능할 뿐만 아니라 매우 효과적이라는 것을 보여주었다. 둘째, 구술이 무대에서 구술로서 이야기되는 버바텀 연극은 구술자의 소외문제를 극복하고많은 대중들과 함께 구술자의 삶을 기리는 효과적인 방식이 될 수 있음을 보여주었다. 셋째, 구술사 공연은 구술 아카이브를 축적하는 작업과 매우 효과적으로 연동될 수있음을 보여주었다. 넷째, 구술사를 교육과 연계시켜서 진행하는 것은 역사 교육뿐만아니라 사회 교육, 실용 교육, 감성 교육, 세대 간의 소통 등 다면적 효과를 거둘 수있음을 말해주었다.
