How should “mononoke’ and ‘oni’ in Japanese classical literature be translated into Korean

- For many translators, it is often a confusing matter to translate a proper noun. In particular, the concept such as “mononoke” and “oni” is very different from country to country. This makes it a struggle for translators to think of the best suited translation. This study investigates the Korean translations of “mononoke” and “oni” from the Tale of Genji. This Korean version, focuses on the concept of “gwisin”. The results are as follows. Firstly, this study conducted research on the “gwisin” as it appeared in “Hanguk Gubi Munhak Daegye”. As a result, there are not many descriptions of how a “gwisin” looks, as it usually appears in the human form. Also, there are few examples of a “gwisin” as a subject of worship. Four -fifths of appearances, account for the cases in which the “gwisin” appears after a person has died. In addition, in more than half of cases, the “gwisin” appears as “a ghost of revenge”. Secondly, in the Korean version of the Tale of Genji, “mononoke” in most cases is translated as “gwisin”. However, in order to accurately convey the disease causing characteristics of the “gwisin”, “mononoke” should be translated as “the gwisin which is causing the disease” when it is not identifiable. In addition, if a grudge of a person is specifically illustrated, then “mononoke” would be better translated as “a ghost of revenge.” Lastly, 20 examples of “Oni” are all translated as “gwisin.” However, “oni” usually only appear in anecdotes and tales. This study picked up on a realistic “oni” in both its shape and behavior. It is not commonly found that the “gwisin” will have similar characteristics to the “oni”. The “oni” in the Heian period is a kind of symbol that has a variety of images. Thus, it is suggested that the “oni” can be translated not as a “gwisin” but as an “oni” following its Japanese pronunciation in order to convey a more precise meaning.

- 본고는 일본의 ‘모노노케’ ‘오니’를 어떻게 번역해야 할지에 대해서, 한국의 ‘귀신’의 개념에 주목하면서 한국어판 『겐지이야기』의 번역의 용례를 살펴보았다. 들여다봤다. 그 결과를 나타내면 다음과 같다. 한국어판『겐지이야기』의 경우, ‘모노노케’를 거의 전부 ‘귀신’으로 번역하고 있다. 필자는 병을 일으킨다는 ‘모노노케’의 성격을 부각시키는 의미에서, 정체를 모른 경우는 ‘병을 일으키는 귀신’으로 번역하고, 병을 일으킨 ‘모노노케’의 정체가 밝혀지고, 특히 그 사람의 원한이 명확하게 기술되고 있다면, ‘원령’이라고 번역하는 편이 글 뜻을 보다 명확히 전달할 수 있지 않을까 하고 제안했다. 한편, 한국어판 『겐지이야기』에서는 총 20사례의 ‘오니’를 전부 ‘귀신’으로 번역하고 있다. 그런데 필자가 예를 둔, 일화나 옛날이야기(소설)속에 등장하는 ‘오니’는 그 모습과 행동에 있어서 현실적이고 실체적이다. 통속적인 이미지의 ‘귀신’의 경우, 이러한 모습과 행동의 사례가 발견되지 않는 점, 또 헤이안 시대의 ‘오니’란 일종의 기호로서 그 이미지가 다양한 점 등을 염두에 두면, 무리하게 ‘귀신’으로 번역하기보다는 일본어 발음대로 ‘오니’라고 하는 편이 합리적이라고 제안했다.

- 본 연구소는 일본학 관련의 학문의 한 분야를 발굴·개척하여 문화의 상호작용에 의한 교섭에 대해 연구를 진행함으로써 일본학의 다양한 면모를 현재화하는 것을 취지로 한다. 일본학 국제비교란 국가나 민족이라는 분석 단위를 넘어 동아시아라고 하는 문화복합체를 상정하고 그 내부에서 문화생성, 전파, 접촉, 변용에 주목하여 종합적인 문화교섭의 모습을 복안적이고 종합적인 견지에서 해명하려고 하는 새로운 일본학 연구의 하나인 문화교섭학을 소재로 하여, 이미 한일교류사를 중심으로 한 문화교류사의 연구축적을 바탕으로 이를 더욱 확대하여 글로벌한 시점에서 문화교섭학을 중심으로 일본의 문화교류연구를 학문체계로서 구축하고자 하는 것을 목표로 한다. 따라서 본 연구소는 첫째, 다대다 관계의 문화적 복합체로서 인식하는 복안적 시좌를 공유하고 국제적 발진력을 가진 자립한 신진연구자를 육성하고, 둘째, 종래의 2개국간 혹은 학문 문화별 문화연구를 넘어 새로운 학문 분야로서의 일본 문화교섭학을 창출하고 그 이론과 방법, 구체적 사례를 연구하며, 셋째, 각국에서 개별적으로 이루어지고 있는 문화교류연구, 대외관계사 연구 등을 국제적으로 네트워크로 연결하고 동아시아 각 지역의 연구를 리드하고 고유의 국제학회를 가지는 연구허브를 구축하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
