The structure of non-linear reasoning shows that the cause and effect function not mechanistically but in an emergent and complex way so that the sum of part(s) and part(s) is bigger than the total amount. The practice and enlightenment of Zen Buddhism basically reflect the characteristics of a complexity system. The relationship between the practice and enlightenment of Zen Buddhism from Kao-an’s Drawings of the Ten Bulls also shows the non-linear characteristics of a complexity system. The stages of Drawings of the Ten Bulls such as The Search for the Bull(尋牛), Discovering the Footprints(見跡) and The First Sight of the Bull(見牛) do not abstain as an abstraction of immutable reality, but they play a role in making boundaries and connections between each other. It is possible because the university before us is moving through the non-linear cause and effect of a complexity system. The reality of our lives by the non-linear cause and effect like an Indra’s net, in fact, is a dharma realm of inter-dependence and true emptiness(眞空). Seung Shan’s Zen Circle attaches importance to give intrinsic insight into a non-linear complexity system through the method of “Only Don’t Know.” The Zen Circle shows that 0 degrees and 360 degrees, or the state of distinction and the ultimate state, are not different from each other. It does not tell that sentient beings should become buddhas, but it is to emphasize the enlightenment of no difference between sentient beings and buddhas. This means that his Zen Circle, like Drawings of the Ten Bulls, has characteristics of non-linear non-boundaries, so every boundary in everyday life becomes the door to enlightenment or non-boundaries. Particularly, the boundaries of 0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees and 360 degrees in the Zen Circle do not explain the real ontological world but show the relationship between practice and enlightenment, kleshas and bodhi, and sentient beings and Buddha in a holistic and integrated approach.

선불교의 수행·깨달음은 기본적으로 복잡계에서 보여주는 특징을 반영한다. 멱함수 구조와 같이 척도 독립성을 속성으로 하면서 우리가 살아가고 있는 현실계를 떠나지 않으면서도 깨달음이 가능하다는 구조를 보여준다. 비선형의 그물 사유로 나타나는 복잡계가 보여주는 모습은 선불교의 수행·깨달음에서 부분과 전체가 통합되면서도 유기체적으로 서로를 반영하는 모습과 다르지 않다. 곽암의 십우도에서 나타나는 선불교의 수행·깨달음의 관계 역시 복잡계의 비선형성을 보여준다. 심우(尋牛), 견적(見跡), 견우(見牛) 등의 과정은 불변의 실체로 추상화되어 존재하는 것이 아니라 서로의 경계를 만들면서도 이어주는 역할을 한다. 그리고 숭산의 선원(禪圓)은 비선형적 복잡계를 ‘오직 모를 뿐’이라는 방식을 통해 직관적으로 통찰하는 것을 중시한다. 선원에서는 0도와 360도 지점 즉 분별의 영역과 궁극적 경지가 다르지 않음을 나타내는데 숭산의 선원(禪圓)은 십우도처럼 비선형적 무경계를 특징으로 일상의 모든 경계가 바로 깨달음으로 들어갈 수 있는 무경계가 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 특히 숭산이 강조한 0도, 90도, 180도, 270도, 360도의 경계는 존재론적으로 실재하는 세계를 설명한다기보다 수행과 깨달음, 번뇌와 보리, 중생과 부처 등의 관계를 전체론적이며 통합적으로 보여주는데 의미가 있다.
