This study examines cultural studies, which is one subject area of academic research in Japan. The term “Cultural studies” in this paper refers to the academic trends centered on British media studies in the 1960s, and then to cultural studies that spread to Japan and formed an academic trend. One of the academic achievements of cultural studies is that it presented an analytical framework through practical daily life by the application of various theoretical approaches. In this study, I applied the theory of cultural studies and focused on the activeness and resistance of actors. Among the theories of cultural studies, this study especially focused on the culturalim theory, which emphasizes the resistance of actors, and then examined the empirical studies developed based on this study. In addition, I examined the manner in which cultural studies in Japan have developed, and within this process, how the research on the resistance of actors has been carried out. Finally, this study examined the problems of resistance research based on culturalism and then pointed out the analytical limitations. In particular, there is criticism that the experiences and practices of individuals who are the subject of resistance are products of the structure. This is basically a theoretical limitation due to the paradox of culturalism and structuralism. In the end, the alternative to this theoretical contradiction necessitates continuous empirical research.

본고는 일본에서 학문적 흐름의 한 영역으로 위치하고 있는 문화연구에 관해 고찰한 것이다. 본고에서 말하는 문화연구란 1960년대 영국의 미디어 연구를 중심으로 전개된 학문적 흐름을 말하며, 이후 일본에 전파되어 하나의 학문적 조류를 형성한 문화연구를 말한다. 문화연구의 학문적 성과 중의 하나는 기존의 여러 학문영역에서 제기된 다양한 이론적인 관점들을 일상생활의 영역에서의 실천적 접근을 통한 분석적 틀을 제시한 점이다. 본고에서는 문화연구를 이론적 배경으로 하여 행위자의 능동성이나 저항성에 초점을 맞춘 연구를 중심으로 논의를 전개하였다. 특히, 문화연구 이론 중에서 행위자의 저항성을 강조한 문화주의 이론을 검토하였고, 이를 바탕으로 전개된 실증적 연구도 고찰하였다. 또한, 일본사회에서 이러한 문화연구가 어떠한 형태로 전개되었고, 그 과정에서 어떠한 방식으로 행위자의 저항성에 관한 연구가 이루어졌는지를 검토하였다. 마지막으로 본고에서는 문화주의에 기초한 저항성 연구가 어떠한 문제점을 안고 있는 지를 고찰하였고, 이를 바탕으로 분석적 한계점을 비판적으로 검토하였다. 특히, 저항의 주체가 되어 있는 개인의 경험이나 실천이 지배 구조의 산물이라는 비판이 존재한다. 이는 기본적으로 문화주의 관점과 구조주의 관점이 안고 있는 패러독스에 의한 이론적 한계라고 말 할 수 있다. 결국에는 이러한 이론적 모순에 대한 대안은 지속적인 실증적 연구의 필요성이라고 하는 과제를 남기고 있다.
