The desires of female characters in Korean classic novels have a wide spectrum in terms of their subject, scope, and form. Jin Chae-gyeong, a character in the novel engages in matchmaking while pretending to be a man, for Yoon Yeo-ok. The rationale that she provides for her actions is of being a “real friend.” For Jin Chae-gyeong, being a real friend is a reason for self-sacrifice for the purpose of realizing love. For Cho-ok, in the novel , the friend might have been the only person to understand her adverse circumstances and recognize her talents. Bang Gwan-joo and Yeong Hye-bing in the novel have different desires. Bang Gwan-joo and Yeong Hye-bing manage to achieve what they want by sharing each other’s secrets and becoming real friends. For them, having a friend is a practical choice for realization of their dreams. Yeo Jin-joo and Hwa Heung-mi in own extraordinary talents. For both, friend is the one with whom loyalty and brotherhood is shared and reciprocated. Therefore, friend has various meanings for women depending on their reality and circumstances, which is different from that for men. The difference is attributable to the circumstances and reality of the women of those times, when women’s desires were denied and suppressed; consequently, women needed self-rescue measures to overcome and resolve their reality and problems arising from this, which was, real friend. In such a context, those women who pursue a relationship with a real friend and finally gain one can be seen as genuine feminists who do not fear change and challenge and can actively win their own lives.

조선후기에 등장하는 소설 가운데 지기를 욕망하는 여성들에 주목할 필요가 있다. 여성들의 지기는 계급, 신분, 처지에 따라 다양하게 나타난다. <창선감의록>에 등장하는 진채경의 경우 지기는 사랑을 실현하기 위한 자기희생의 명분이다. <포의교집>의 초옥에게 지기는 자신의 불우한 처지를 이해해주고 능력을 인정해주는 유일한 대안이다. <방한림전>에 등장하는 방관주와 영혜빙은 서로의 비밀을 공유하고 지기가 되면서 각자의 소망을 성취해낸다. 이들에게 지기는 소망을 성취하기 위한 실리적 선택이었던 것이다. 또한 <숙녀지기>의 여진주와 화홍미는 만나자마자 서로의 처지를 알아보고 지기가 된다. 여진주와 화홍미에게 지기는 서로에게 보은의 대상이며 형제지의를 나눌만한 의리의 존재라 할 수 있다. 이처럼 여성들에게 지기는 각자의 처지와 상황에 따라 다양한 방식으로 나타나고 남성들의 그것과는 다른 의미를 생산해낸다. 욕망 자체를 거부당하고 거세당해야 만했던 여성들은 자신의 현실적 한계와 그에서 비롯된 문제를 극복하고 해결하기 위한 자구책이 필요했다. 그것이 바로 지기였던 것이다.
