This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of "The Fragmented Orchestra" (2009) by Jane Grant, John Matthias, and Nick Ryan, as a conceptual experimentation that explores the extended field of contemporary media and art. In particular, "The Fragmented Orchestra" illustrates the potential of twenty-first century media by operating as a medium that enhances human sensibility to provide better access to the environment through the use of real-time synthesis and augmentation, thus intensifying the communicative processes between human bodies and the environments. In so doing, "The Fragmented Orchestra" allows audiences to experience depth—a spatiotemporal mediality that sustains the inter-implications between subjects and the world, from which their relational boundaries emerge. Challenging the traditional notion of depth, the third dimension added to height and width, Merleau-Ponty and his commentators offered a more fundamental conception of depth. In their work, depth is no longer treated as an abstract geometrical space that is indirectly inferred from two-dimensional retinal images; instead, it is a primordial spatiality that grounds the process of the constant intertwining between the body and the world. In "The Fragmented Orchestra," space reveals itself as a process of becoming that is continuously defined by bodily involvement; the work offers an experiential interface to the fundamental spatiality called depth.
