Today our moral education in university seems to be tied up to the dualism of ‘education for civility’ versus ‘education for moral character. It is because of this dualistic vision that people have taken a negative attitude toward emotional learning programs, even though they agreed on the role of the emotions in moral life. Normally the purpose of the civility education consists in the progress of critical thinking and rational moral reasoning, but that fact does not explain why we have to exclude emotions in moral education. A person as citizen does not differ from the person as a man. If we accept it, the education for civility and the education for moral character must be unified into a single model. As a trial model, I developed in this paper a way of using the anger for university moral education. The emotion of anger has a deep relation with critical thinking and with self-esteem, so that it may offer a opportunity to mediate between these two conflicting paradigms of moral education.

오늘날 우리 대학의 윤리교육은 ‘시민성교육이냐 인성교육이냐’는 이분법적 사고에 사로잡혀 진일보하지 못하고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 도덕교육에서 감정의 중요성에 대해서는 다들 동감하면 서도 감정을 적극적으로 활용한 수업방식들에 대해선 부정적이거나 소극적인데, 그 이면에는 방 금 언급한 이분법적 사고의 영향력이 크다. 시민성교육은 비판적 사고와 합리적 도덕추론능력의 함양에 목표를 둔다. 하지만 그것이 감정 기반 도덕교육을 배척하는 이유가 될 수는 없다. 시민 으로서 한 개인과 인간으로서 한 개인이 다르지 않다. 이를 인정한다면, 시민성교육과 인성교육 은 결국 하나로 통합되는 것이 마땅하다. 이 통합 모델을 구축하기 위한 시도로 필자는 분노의 감정을 활용한 도덕과 수업모델을 제시해 보았다. 분노의 감정은 사회비판적 기능과 자존감 보호 의 기능을 동시에 지닌다는 점에서 시민성교육과 인성교육을 연결하는 훌륭한 매개자가 될 것이 라 판단되었기 때문이다.
