This study aimed to symbolically illuminate the anxiety expressed in the work of Edward Hopper(1882-1967) from a psychoanalytic point of view. In this study, Hopper 's symbolic image of anxiety expressed in his work was classified into three themes: anxiety composed of light and color, anxiety expressed in a window motif and anxiety expressed in a female figure. First, in Hopper 's work, light and colors were depicted geometrically as angular shapes, such as rectangles or parallelograms. This light itself was an abstract form and idea, which was used as a kind of defense mechanism to replace the warmth being longing for inside. Second, the window motif represents the conflict between the instinct and the inner world of the self which would like to jump into reality but only gaze instead. The anxiety that came from communication and relationship was expressed through the window connecting the inside and the outside. The window further consolidated separation and fear of the enclosed space, and also expressed a reflection of the de-humanized social situation(standing). Third, female figures were introduced to express conflict and lack in the relationship of mother and wife, and the anxiety is connotatively expressed as a defensive system of deviation of gaze, symbolic depiction of object, projection, transference, and identification. In conclusion, Hopper showed the process of creative healing by integrating consciousness and unconsciousness through his works in a psychoanalytic point of view and by sublimating the oppressed mind energy into artistic energy.

본 연구는 정신분석적 관점에서 Edward Hopper의 작품에 나타난 불안을 상징적으로 조명하였다. 작품 속에 표출된 불안의 상징적 이미지를 빛과 색으로 구성된 불안, 창을 모티브로 표현된 불안과 여성 인물상에 나타난 불안의 세 가지 관점으로 살펴보았다. 첫째, Hopper의 작품에서 빛과 색채는 직사각형이나 평행사변형처럼 기하학적으로 각이 진 형태로 묘사되는데 빛 자체가 추상적인 형태나 관념으로 그가 내면에 갈구하는 따스함을 대체하는 일종의 방어기제로 사용되었다. 둘째, 창(window) 모티브는 현실에 뛰어들고 싶지만 바라보고만 있는 본능과 자아의 내면세계의 갈등 및 소통과 관계의 문제의 불안을 안과 밖을 연결하는 매개체로 나타내었다. 창은 밀폐된 공간의 분리와 두려움을 강화시키며, 탈 인간화된 사회상의 반영이다. 셋째, 여성 인물상을 통해 어머니, 아내와의 갈등과 결핍을 표현하고 시선의 어긋남과 오브제의 상징적 묘사와 투사, 전이, 동일시의 방어기제로 불안을 암시적으로 표현하였다. 정신분석적 관점에서 볼 때 Hopper는 자신의 작품을 통해서 의식과 무의식을 통합하고 억압된 정신의 에너지를 예술로 승화하여 창조적 치유과정을 보여주었다.
