This study is to rediscover the value of the dreams in psychotherapy, by examining the language of dream as a carrier of the unconsciousness. To do this, I have taken a look at relations between dream and the unconsciousness, and then searched how discourses of the unconsciousness is modified and extended, through the Lacan’s theory that linguistically reinterpreted Freudian psychoanalysis. The dreams are fantastic realization of oppressed desires, so they are distorted and transformed in the process of conscientization of unconsciousness. Freud stressed the content of dreams in symbolic system, while Lacan completely excluded the meanings of the dreams and focused on the structure of the dreams and unconsciousness. But in some ways, we can argue that Lacan succeeded and developed Freudian theory, by reestablishing linguistically key issues and expanding widely the concept of unconscious in psychoanalysis. Freud believed that the dreams must go through processes of condensation, displacement and distortion in the dreamwork, Lacan approached linguistically to this Freudian mechanism through the concept of metaphor and metonymy. Freud explained that the unconsciousness and preconsciousness have different languages, paid attention to linguistic properties and singularities of the unconsciousness. Lacan expanded such arguments and concluded that the unconsciousness is structured like a language. Although dreams may not tell us the whole story and picture of our desires, we can utilize Freud and Lacan’s works on dreams and desires as a task to properly intervene in the psyche of subjects who are divided and alienated in modern society.

본 연구의 목적은 무의식의 메시지인 꿈의 언어를 프로이트와 라캉의 관점에서 살펴봄으로써 심리치료에서의 꿈의 가치를 재발견하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 욕망과 표상으로써 꿈과 무의식의 관계를 살펴본 후 프로이트의 이론을 언어학적으로 재해석한 라캉의 관점을 통해 꿈과 무의식에 대한 담론들이 어떻게 변형되며 확장되는지를 알아보았다. 꿈은 억압된 욕망의 환상적 실현으로 무의식적 욕망이 의식에 도달하는 과정에서 왜곡, 변형된다. 프로이트가 꿈의 상징체계에 있어 내용에 중점을 두는 반면 라캉은 의미는 철저하게 배제시키고 그것의 구조에 중점을 둠으로써 차이를 보인다. 그러나 라캉이 프로이트의 이론을 언어학적으로 재정립함으로써 무의식에 대한 프로이트의 견해를 계승한다고 할 수 있다. 프로이트는 꿈의 작업과정에서 타협의 방향으로써 압축과 전위의 과정을 거친다고 보았고 라캉은 이를 은유와 환유를 통해서 언어학적으로 접근하였다. 프로이트는 무의식과 전의식은 다른 언어를 가지며 꿈의 해석을 번역과정으로 표현하여 무의식이 가지는 언어성에 주목했고, 라캉은 이를 확장하여 무의식이 언어와 같이 구조화되어 있다고 결론 내린다. 비록 꿈이 우리 욕망의 전모를 말해주지 않을 수 있으나 현대 사회에서 분열과 소외를 겪는 주체들의 정신세계에 적절하게 개입하고 대안을 찾기 위한 하나의 작업으로써 프로이트와 라캉의 꿈과 욕망의 작업을 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
