This study suggests that firms search for external knowledge for their global activities. So we empirically examine the effects of export intensity, representing firm internationalization, on the depth and breadth of external knowledge search. And, by examining the moderating effects of firms’ focus on creating innovations, the study attempts to reveal whether their motivation to search for external knowledge is based on securing technical knowledge for internationalization. Based on 2016 Korean innovation survey(manufacturing industries), the empirical findings show that export intensity increases the depth of external knowledge search but decreases the breadth of this search. And the results show that firms’ focus on creating innovations weakens the negative relationship between export intensity and external search breadth. This study implies that external knowledge search is determined by firms’ internationalization strategies, and that difference in knowledge of firms pursuing internationalization is affected by external knowledge sources.

본 연구는 기업이 국제화에 필요한 지식을 수급하기 위해 외부 지식 탐색을 할 수 있음을 제시한다. 이에 기업 국제화를 나타내는 수출 집중도가 외부 지식 탐색 집중도와 탐색 범위에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 그리고 기업이 혁신 개발에 집중하는 정도가 수출 집중도와 외부 지식 탐색 간의 관계를 조절하는 것을 분석하여 기업이 외부 지식을 확보하려는 이유가 국제화를 위한 기술 지식 확보에 있는지를 살펴보았다. 2016년 한국기업혁신조사(제조업 부문) 자료를 이용하여 실증 분석한 결과 수출 집중도가 높아질수록 외부 지식 탐색 집중도는 높아졌지만, 탐색 범위는 좁아지는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 수출 집중도와 외부 지식 탐색 범위 간의 부의 관계는 기업이 혁신 개발에 집중할수록 약화되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 기업의 외부 지식 탐색이 국제화 전략에 의해 결정되며 국제화를 추구하는 기업들 간의 지식 차이는 외부 지식 원천에 의해서도 영향을 받음을 시사한다.
