The purpose of this paper is to analyze the properties of verbal style about the Donghak Peasant Revolution participant and figure out its meaning based on the testimony of Donghak Peasant Revolution stories. The witnesses’ speaking method and attitude to the participants of Donghak Peasant Revolution are revealed according to characteristics of their hierarchy as follow. First, the witness highlights the connectivity between participants and Jeon BongJun who led the Donghak Peasant Revolution or intends to emphasize participants’ proud side by using an authoritative historian’s evaluation about the participants. This witness’s speaking style appears regardless of participants’ class. Second, the witnesses use the speaking method that intend to increase the reliability of the participants’ competence and prestige by testifying the participant objectively with the factual information. Even the kin, the speaking method objectively evaluating the participants is to emphasize that the participant is a respectable person. It is a speaking method that appears in witnesses who attested the Donghak Peasant Revolution participants of mainly nobleman classes. Third, based on the subjective evaluation from the witness and the people around the participants, they use a speaking method that emphasizes the authority and ability of the participant. The witnesses underline that the participant is an excellent person to participate in the Donghak Peasant Revolution through the subjective evaluation about participant’s appearance and knowledge level. Also, it reflects the testimony of the people around the participant and confirms participant’s ability and participation or absent in regard to the Donghak Peasant Revolution. This is a noticeable speaking method from the witnesses who testified about the participants of Donghak Peasant Revolution who belong to the peasant class. The witnesses express their pride about participants of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and testify the participants’ achievements in various speaking ways for historical reevaluation

이 글은 동학농민혁명담 증언록을 통해 동학농민혁명 참여자에 대한 말하기 방식의 특성을 분석하고 그 의미를 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 동학농민혁명 참여자에 대한 전승자의 말하기 방식과 태도가 계급적 특성에 따라 다음과 같이 드러난다. 첫째, 전승자는 동학농민혁명을 주도한 전봉준과 참여자의 연계성을 부각시키거나 후대 권위가 있는 역사가의 참여자에 대한 평가를 내세워 자랑스러운 참여자의 면모를 부각시키고자 한다. 증언자의 이러한 말하기 방식은 참여자 계급과 관계없이 나타난다. 둘째, 전승자가 참여자에 대해 사실적 정보 위주로 객관화시켜서 증언함으로써 참여자의 능력과 권위의 신뢰성을 높이려는 말하기 방식을 쓴다. 혈육조차가 참여자를 객관적으로 평가하는 말하기 방식은 참여자가 만인이 존경할만한 인물임을 부각시키기 위함이다. 주로 양반 계급의 동학농민혁명 참여자에 대한 증언자에게서 나타나는 말하기 방식이다. 셋째, 증언자와 참여자 주변인물의 주관적인 평가에 기반하여 참여자의 권위와 능력을 부각시키는 말하기 방식을 쓴다. 참여자의 외형, 지식수준에 대한 주관적 평가를 통해 참여자가 동학농민혁명에 참여할 만한 뛰어난 인물임을 부각시킨다. 그리고 참여자 주변 인물들의 증언을 반영하여 참여자의 동학농민혁명 참여 여부와 능력을 확인시킨다. 이는 농민 계급의 동학농민혁명 참여자에 대한 증언자에게서 두드러지게 나타나는 말하는 방식이다. 전승자들은 동학농민혁명 참여자에 대한 자긍심을 드러내고, 역사적 재평가를 위해 다양한 말하기 방식으로 참여자의 행적을 증언하고 있다.
