This study is a theoretical study which examines the meaning of 'autonomy' among elements of architectural vocabulary and how it is applied in the contemporary architecture. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between the concept of autonomy and the autonomy of architecture, when we interpret the architecture. In this process, this study explores the characteristics of autonomy, the theoretical content of autonomy, and locality applied in architecture. Second, this study tries to analyze the detailed research based on the above. To do this, this study examines it from the work of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, and describes how the concept of autonomy in COOP's works is applied in their architecture and how they are done. Finally, this study argues that the synthesis of autonomy and arbitrariness can be used as a tool to create local characteristics.

본 연구는 건축의 어휘가 지니고 있는 요소 중에서 ‘자율성’의 의미를 되새겨 보고, 이를 통하여, 현대 건축에서 그것이 어떻게 적용되고 있는지를 살펴보는 이론적 연구이다. 그리고 이를 통하여, 건축을 해석함에 있어 자율성의 결과로 나타나는 자율성과 어떠한 관계 속에서 이루어지고 있는지를 밝히는 것을 연구의 주요 목적으로 한다. 이 과정에서 본 연구는 먼저 인문학에서 논의된 자율성에서 어떠한 특징들을 가지고 적용되었는지, 그리고 건축에서 적용된 자율성과 지역성에 대한 내용에 대한 이론적 내용을 전개한다. 두 번째, 위의 내용을 토대로 구체적인 연구 분석을 시도하는데, 본 연구에서는 COOP HIMMELB(L)AU(이하, 쿱)의 작품으로 한정한다. 그리고 COOP의 작품에서 나타나는 자율성이 그들의 건축에서 어떠한 방식으로 적용되었으며, 그 과정이 어떠한지를 살펴본다. 마지막으로 이상의 내용을 종합하여, 자율성과 임의성의 통합체는 지역성을 창출하는데 있어, 하나의 도구로 작용할 수 있음을 도출하는 것으로 연구를 진행한다.
