The purpose of this paper is to offer new perspectives on communication with person with dementia. In order to achieve this purpose, I attempt to apply the theory of metaphor in cognitive linguistics to the interpretation of “ wandering”. In Japan, some psychiatrists and other health‐care workers have expressed and shared their views on the “living world” of dementia. They assert that the elderly people with dementia sometimes seems to behave and live in another world. At the same time, these experts at caring for dementia have insisted that it is important to understand and the “living world” which people with dementia live in. This paper is based on these preceding studies. Chapter 1 begins with a brief overview of the Japanese social welfare program from 1970s to 2000s. In addition to this, I will reference a research on the change of image of the person with dementia. Chapter 2 is devoted to discussing two pioneering research projects in the field of medical care. A detailed account of their theories on the “living world” which people with dementia have will be presented. Chapter 3 deals with the structure of “ wandering”. I will consider it from the point of view of metaphor.
