This study represents an attempt to measure learners’ belief in cooperative activities and changes to this belief from the beginning to the end of a semester in a Japanese class. First, I examined the change in belief using the scale to measure belief in cooperation. This scale is composed of three factors: usefulness of cooperation, individual orientation, and inequity. “Usefulness of cooperation” was found to be significantly higher, while “individual orientation” and “inequity” were significantly lower. These results indicate that the belief in cooperative activities was positively strengthened. In addition, I categorized the learners’ free description of the effectiveness on cooperative activities, which appeared to be useful in terms of “mutual supplements or synergies,” “awareness or consciousness,” “acquisition of knowledge and information,” “enjoyment or fun,” and “sense of responsibility.” By simultaneously analyzing the above measurements and the learners’ descriptions, it was possible to ascertain the learners’ belief in cooperative activities as well as changes in this belief. These findings have implications for design and practice, which could more positively lead to cooperative activities and enhance the effectiveness of activities.
