Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture 15-1, The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of using the “ecological language teaching strategy” in Korean vocabulary instruction. The perspective of ecology have core theses as the relations and the wholeness. “Ecological language learning” is a theoretical framework based on the language learning process for foreign language learners. Features of this theory have key words of “relations, context, pattern and system, emergence, quality, value, critical, variety, activity”. Korean vocabulary education needs to adopt the ecological language learning because the essential concept of the lexicon denotes the meaning of language by which we live. The ecological language teaching strategy can be particularly maximized by the “environment, context, and cooperation-based” approach already followed in the field of Korean vocabulary instruction. In more concrete terms, there are three strategies of ecological language teaching: affordance, prolepsis, and expanded ZPD. Affordance creates an appropriate environment in which to induce inquiry into the lexicon, prolepsis provides a vocabulary task with rich context, and expanded ZPD helps learners to interact with their peers in the process of vocabulary learning. Based on these ecological language teaching strategies, this study judges the realization of Korean vocabulary instruction by designing the “idioms” inquiry. (Daegu University)

이 연구는 한국어 어휘 수업에서 생태학적 언어 교수 전략의 활용 가능성을 모색하는 것이 목적이다. 생태학적 관점은 관계성과 총체성을 핵심 명제로 삼고 있다. ‘생태학적 언어 학습론’은 이러한 핵심 명제를 바탕에 둔 외국어 학습자를 위한 언어 학습에 관한 이론 체제로서 ‘관계성, 맥락, 유형과 체계, 창발, 질, 가치, 비판성, 가변성, 다양성, 활동’ 등을 특징으로 지닌다. 한국어 어휘 교육은 삶으로서의 의미를 내포하고 있는 어휘의 본질적 개념에 비추어볼 때, 생태학적 언어 학습이 적극적으로 도입되어야 한다. 특히 생태학적 교수 전략은 한국어 어휘 학습에서 ‘환경, 맥락, 협력 중심성’의 가치를 극대화할 수 있다. 구체적으로 ‘행동유도성, 예기, 확장된 ZPD’라는 생태학적 교수 전략은, 한국어 어휘 학습에서 어휘 탐구를 유도하는 적절한 환경을 조성하고, 맥락성이 부여된 어휘 과제를 제공하며, 동료 학습자와 상호작용이 가능한 어휘 학습을 설계하게끔 할 수 있다. 이 연구는 이와 같은 생태학 적 언어 교수 전략을 활용한 한국어 어휘 수업을 관용어 탐구를 중심으로 설계하여 그 실현 가능성을 가늠해 보았다.
