The Chronicles of Narnia is a well known children’s book series written by Clive Staples Lewis. Due to the great popularity, the fiction has been adapted into pop culture many times. The first book of the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion and the Witch , the Wordrobe is the most famous one. This book is the research object of the article concerning the same name animation. First of all, I will examine Lewis’s view about belief and then, regarding this idea, look at the story and an animation which was made by some Anglo-American productions in 1979. As we all know, the main focus of the first book is a fight between the good and the evil, which implies the human psychology and cultural symbols in the mythological dimension; and has a strong Christian spirit through all over the story. It is not so difficult to see the fact that the 1979 animation seems to be an old fashioned in comparison with today’s animation, but faithfully portrayed the 70’s-80’s period of blue jean culture. It seems that the animation has a true vision of C. S. Lewis. The story of the Lion and the Witch , the Wordrobe is a mixture of two axis of Western culture, Hellenism and Hebraism. Its external appearance is a story of myth but it really embraces many biblical contents. In this story, he strongly holds the Christian spirit using mythology, and aims to deliver the spirit to children more easily. This could be called a symbolism of the Chronicles of Narnia.

<나니아 연대기>는 C. S. 루이스(Clive Staples Lewis)가 저술한 시리 즈 아동소설이다. 매우 대중적인 탓에 대중문화 작품으로 여러 번 각색되었 다. 그 중에서도 <나니아 연대기>의 1편인 『사자, 마녀와 옷장』이 가장 유명하다. 본고는 이 『사자, 마녀와 옷장』을 연구의 대상으로 삼았다. 먼 저 루이스의 신앙 세계를 고찰하고 이를 감안하여 줄거리에 대해 살펴보며, 나아가 영미권 대중문화 작품인 1979년 애니메이션인 <사자, 마녀, 그리고 옷장>으로 어떻게 구현되었나를 고찰한다. 이미 잘 알려져 있듯 이 작품은 선악의 대결을 배경으로 하며, 신화적 차원에서의 인간 심리 및 문화적 상 징들이 내재되어 있고, 기독교 정신과도 깊게 상통한다. 1979년의 애니메이 션은 현재 애니메이션과 비교하면 다소는 고루하지만 70∼80년대 당시의 아날로그적인 청바지 문화 시대상을 충실하게 구현하는 방식으로 되어 있으 며, 루이스의 관점들이 잘 담겨 있다. 『사자, 마녀와 옷장』에는 서양 문화 의 두 축인 헬레니즘과 헤브라이즘의 절묘하게 결합되어 있다. 신화의 외형 을 하고 있지만 실제로는 성경 내용들과 의의를 함축하고 있기도 하다. 루 이스가 신화를 이용해 아이들에게 기독교 정신을 더 쉽게 전달하고 보다 효 과적으로 옹호하려 했음을 알 수 있다. 이것이 <나니아 연대기>의 상징성 이라 할 수 있을 것이다.
