Other than learning the “basics of the language,” the objectives of “Kotoshogakudokuhon” are to cultivate the citizens’ ability to acquire “loyalty and patriotism” and “practical knowledge.” Especially, the contents are significantly concerned with the history that “raises patriotism” and natural science. The aims of including natural science are divided into four parts. First, the aim is to understand and apply scientific knowledge to the daily situations experienced by students. Second, the research aims to determine the factors that would make it possible to strengthen the intellectual curiosity of students by introducing rare animals and novel Japanese inventions. The third objective is to help students acquire observation, research, experimental, and rationalization skills by introducing them to scientists who made significant achievements in their fields. Lastly, we aimed to assist students to understand and widen their scope of knowledge by linking the contents with the field of natural science. In the part of 『Kotoshogakudokuhon』 pertaining to natural science, depending on the levels of difficulty and the agenda, the following methods are used: 1. dialogic style between two characters, 2. storytelling, 3. insertion of story in the informative essay, 4. insertion of story in the argumentative essay 5. combination of argumentative and informative essay, and 6. informative essay. These methods are intended to attract students’ attention and assist them to understand the topic. The fact that the part of 『Kotoshogakudokuhon』 relating to natural science focuses on the introduction of the rational and practical explanation of scientific information rather than on the theoretical explanation of phenomena, illustrates the uniqueness and significance of the textbook. In addition, it is no exaggeration to say that the textbook is the foundation of modern scientific education in modern Japan, which is based on western pragmatism.

국민이 알아야할 ‘국어의 기본’ 그리고 ‘충군애국’ 및 ‘사회적･실용적 상식’을 가진 근대국민 양성을 목적으로 한 것이 근대 일본 검정교과서 『고등소학독본』이다. 제재 구성의 조사 결과, ‘민족적 자부심고취’를 위한 역사와 함께 ‘실용적 과학 지식’에 대한 교육 내용을 담은 이과 또한 매우 중시했던 것을 알 수 있다. 이과교육의 내용과 목적은 다음의 네 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 학생이 주변에서 자주 접하는 사물, 식물, 동물 그리고 현상에 대한 이해, 인체의 기능 등과 같은 지식 제공을 통해 지식의 실용화를 유도하고 있다. 둘째, 일본 국내에서 쉽게 접할 수 없는 희귀한 동물, 새로운 발명품 등의 모습과 특성을 설명함으로써 지적 호기심 및 넓은 세계에 대한 인식을 갖게 한다. 셋째, 현상 및 발명품에 대한 과학적 원리 및 과학적 업적을 세운 위인에 대해 교육함으로써 관찰력, 탐구심, 실험정신, 그리고 합리적 사고를 할 수 있도록 하였다. 넷째, 이과 단원의 교육내용을 자연스럽게 연계하여 학습자가 과학을 통합적으로 이해하게 하였으며 동시에 지식의 확산을 도모하고 있다. 당시 학생에게는 다소 생소한 과학적 내용을 난이도와 주제에 따라 ①등장 인물간의 대화체 방식, ②스토리텔링 방식, ③설명문과 이해를 위한 스토리 삽입 방식, ④논설문과 스토리삽입, ⑤설명문과 논설문의 혼용, ⑥설명문 방식 등의 다양한 서술 방식을 도입함으로써 학습자의 관심과 이해를 높이고자 했다. 『고등소학독본』의 이과 단원들은 과학 이론을 체계적으로 전달한다는 측면 보다는 새롭고 합리적인 과학적 정보와 지식의 제공과 실용성을 강조한 통합 교과적 성격을 띤다는 면에서 커다란 의의를 갖는다. 또한 이를 통해 대중적 근대 과학 교육이 시작되었다 해도 과언이 아니며 서양의 실용주의적 학문을 받아들이려 했던 근대 일본 교육의 근대화에 큰 영향을 미쳤다.
