The 7th curriculum has oriented toward the curriculum-based schooling system, in which the schooling is administrated by curriculum rather than textbook. This system tends to insist on its usefulness as well as knowledge. Recently, the counseling function is included in the teacher's role statement, and many teachers are required to spend some of the day in classrooms conducting developmentally appropriate counseling and guidance lessons. But many teachers have little opportunities to naturally contact with their students in and out of classroom. This is due in part to the lack of knowledge which they should have in order to cope with students' inappropriate behaviors, but more importantly in part to the lack of time which they spend to meet with their students. Therefore, in order to solve this problem it is required to interweave some counseling programs with the classroom teaching of subject matter. In other words, the education of subject matter should be oriented to the counseling approach rather than the technological approach. According to this demand, the purpose of this article is to examine the possibility of integrating the education of subject matter with counseling program, and to suggest a new viewpoint of the education of subject matter. From this viewpoint, learning is viewed as the journey of self-reflection on the part of learner that lead to accomplish his or her self-actualization, and the classroom teaching of subject matter is supposed to be the human service that help the learner to connect the knowledge of subject matter with his or her own experiences in order to accomplish the integrative self-system. According to these premises, the author suggests the framework of thinking about the teaching and learning of subject matter so called the rainbow learning process in which help the learner use the acquired knowledge of subject matter to organize his or her own experiences. Also, the author discusses some of results which this suggestion might bring to the teaching practice and/or the learning outcome, and recommends some of tasks that teachers should conductin order to carry out this project successfully.

제7차 교육과정에서 표방하는 ‘교육과정 중심의 학교교육체제’는 학교교육의 중심을 교과서에서 교사와 학습자의 다양한 경험세계를 포괄하는 교육과정으로 전환함으로써 전통적인 지식 교육의 한계를 극복하고 학교교육의 새로운 접근방법을 시도할 수 있는 계기를 마련했다고 볼 수 있다. 더욱이 생활지도의 중핵적 활동인 상담과 교과학습지도의 중추적 활동인 수업의 경계가 점점 모호해지고 있으며, 이제 우리는 교과교육과 상담의 경계 허물기를 좀 더 적극적으로 모색하지 않으면 안 될 시점에 와 있다. 다시 말해서, 교실에서 아동을 대상으로 전개하는 교육적 행위는 ‘공학적’이기보다는 좀 더 ‘상담적’일 필요가 있는 것이다. 이 글은 이러한 요구에 부응하여 교과교육과 상담의 접목 가능성을 탐색하는 계기를 마련하기 위해 작성된 것이다. 먼저 학교교육 실제에서 전개되고 있는 가르침과 배움의 현상에 관한 개념적 사유의 틀을 다각적으로 논의하고, 학교교육과 상담의 본질 그리고 교과와 교과교육의 성격에 관한 몇 가지 가정을 제시한다. 이 글은 가르침과 배움의 본질적 의미를 적극적인 삶과 자기완성에 도달하기 위한 자아성찰의 여정으로 성격화하고 있으며, 교과교육의 기본적 성격을 교과학습을 통해 습득된 지식체계를 넘어서 삶의 주체인 자기의 완성에 필요한 자아성찰을 안내하는 체계적인 조력활동으로 새롭게 규정하고 있다. 이 글은 또한 이처럼 가르침과 배움의 현상에 대한 새로운 개념적 사유의 틀에 기초해서 교과교육과 상담을 접목하여 학교교육의 본래적 목적을 달성하기 위한 실천적 과제를 제안하고, 이러한 시도가 교과교육 실제에서 초래하게 될 변화와 향후 과제를 논의한다.
