The purpose of this article is to summarize the results of the research on orthography and phoneme that can be seen in the textbook of the Enlightenment period and to present prospect of research on orthography and phoneme in the textbook of the Enlightenment period. To this end, I have outlined previous research list, directions of research, and research trends. And I examined the orthography and phoneme centering on the orthography related to writing the consonant characters laterally attached, palatalization and initial law. After that I examined the orthography and phoneme focusing on ‘ㆍ’, ‘ㅡ’, reflection of /j/ under the sibilance and front vowelization of under the sibilance. And I examined the orthography and phoneme of the consonant, centered on the law of 7 final consonants and the orthography of the consonant group. Then I looked at the buncheol (orthography of part fragments), yeoncheol (orthography of moving consonants to the beginning of the next syllable) and jungcheol (mix of buncheol and yeoncheol) and then I looked at the spacing and punctuation marks in some textbooks. Finally, I briefly review the characteristics of individual textbooks, taking into account the purpose of compiling textbooks, readers, writers, style, difficulty of textbook. And I presented the prospect that it is necessary to clarify the difference between textbooks through comparison between textbooks based on this achievement.

이 글의 목표는 개화기 교과서에서 보이는 표기와 이를 통해 알 수 있는 음운에 관한 그간의 연구 성과를 정리하여 보고 전망을 제시하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 그간의 연구 목록, 연구의 방향, 연구 경향을 개관하여 본 후에 병서, 구개음화 및 두음 법칙 관련 표기를 중심으로 하여 초성의 표기와 음운을, ‘ㆍ’, ‘ㅡ’, 치찰음하 /j/의 반영, 치찰음하 전설모음화 관련 표기를 중심으로 하여 중성의 표기와 음운을, 7종성 표기, 자음군의 표기를 중심으로 하여 종성의 표기와 음운을 살펴보았다. 이어서 분철, 연철, 중철에 관해 살핀 다음, 일부 교과서에서 이루어져 있는 띄어쓰기 및 문장 부호 표기를 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 간략하게나마 교과서의 편찬 목적, 독자, 필자, 문체, 난이도 등을 고려하며 개별 교과서의 표기와 음운에 관한 특징을 자세히 살펴 기술하고 이를 바탕으로 교과서 간의 비교를 통하여 공통점과 차이점을 밝히는 것이 필요하다는 앞으로의 연구 방향을 전망으로서 제시하여 보았다.
